High-End Mooncake Gift Boxes Struggle as Chinese Consumers Shift Toward Value

China's mooncake market is entering its annual peak ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, but this year's sales season is showing a noticeable change: expensive mooncake gift boxes are struggling, while more affordable and simply packaged products are becoming increasingly popular.

Recent market visits and industry data show that consumers are paying closer attention to price, taste and value for money, rather than elaborate packaging and premium positioning.

High-End Gift Boxes Lose Momentum

A bakery store owner in Zhejiang told Chinese media that overall mooncake sales have weakened this year, with high-end gift boxes seeing a particularly noticeable decline. Products priced below 100 yuan have been relatively more popular.

Consumer research cited in recent reports indicates that the mooncake market is moving toward lower price ranges. Sales of gift boxes priced above 1,000 yuan reportedly fell by about 76% year on year, while products priced between 68 yuan and 200 yuan now account for more than 60% of the market.

Market visits in cities including Chongqing have shown a similar trend. Mooncake gift boxes priced between 100 yuan and 200 yuan occupy prominent positions on supermarket shelves, while products priced above 400 yuan are less common. Some higher-priced products are being offered at substantial discounts for group purchases.

Traditional premium brands have also entered the promotional race. Recent reports said some high-end mooncake products were being sold at discounts of roughly 10% to 40%, as retailers seek to reduce inventories before the holiday.

Consumers Are Becoming More Price-Conscious

The shift is particularly visible around the 200-yuan price point.

A mooncake distributor in Changsha told local media that products priced below 100 yuan were selling relatively well, while products above 200 yuan were much harder to move. Other market surveys found that products priced at 79 yuan, 99 yuan and 139 yuan were among the more popular choices.

Online competition has pushed prices even lower. Some mooncake gift boxes are now available for only a few dozen yuan, while one 29.9-yuan product was reported to have accumulated more than two million sales on an online platform.

The trend suggests that consumers have not stopped buying mooncakes. Instead, they are changing what they consider worth paying for.

From Gifts to Everyday Consumption

One of the biggest changes this year is the purpose for which consumers buy mooncakes.

A consumer survey cited by Chinese media found that 50.4% of respondents said they bought mooncakes for their own daily consumption, compared with 42.5% who bought them as gifts. It was the first time self-consumption exceeded gift-giving in the survey.

That change is significant for the industry. When mooncakes are primarily purchased for personal consumption, elaborate packaging and premium branding become less important, while taste, ingredients, health considerations and price become more influential.

A recent visit to supermarkets in Beijing also found that simple gift boxes and individually sold mooncakes were taking up more shelf space. Some consumers said they preferred buying several individual mooncakes for themselves rather than paying hundreds of yuan for a large gift box.

Premium Gift Demand Has Not Disappeared

The slowdown in expensive mooncake gift boxes does not necessarily mean that consumers have abandoned premium Mid-Autumn Festival gifts altogether.

Market observers cited by Chinese media said some premium gift demand is shifting toward categories such as tea and traditional nutritional products. In other words, the change may be less about the disappearance of gift-giving and more about a redistribution of spending across different categories.

Regulatory pressure is also shaping the market. Chinese authorities continue to emphasize reasonable pricing and restrictions on excessive packaging. Products priced above 500 yuan per boxed set are subject to closer regulatory attention, while manufacturers are required to comply with national standards limiting excessive packaging.

A Changing Mooncake Market

This year's Mid-Autumn Festival market suggests that mooncakes are gradually moving away from their traditional image as heavily packaged gift products.

High-End Mooncake Gift Boxes Struggle as Chinese Consumers Shift Toward Value

Consumers are increasingly asking a simpler question: Is the mooncake itself worth the price?

For manufacturers and retailers, the challenge is becoming clearer. Instead of relying on elaborate packaging and high prices, brands may need to compete through taste, quality, healthier ingredients and better value.

The cooling demand for high-end mooncake gift boxes may therefore represent more than a seasonal sales problem. It could signal a broader shift in how Chinese consumers view one of the country's most familiar Mid-Autumn Festival foods.
