China’s First AI-Produced Theatrical Film Set for October 23 Release

China’s first hyper-realistic theatrical film produced with artificial intelligence has officially secured a release date, marking a new milestone in the country’s rapidly developing AI film industry.

“Sanxingdui: Future Past”will hit cinemas nationwide onOctober 23, 2026, according to an announcement on September 27. The 100-minute film is described as the first Chinese theatrical movie produced with AI technology to receive a public screening permit from China’s National Film Administration.

The film combines the ancient Sanxingdui civilization with a futuristic science-fiction setting. Its story revolves around mysterious symbols found on Sanxingdui bronze artifacts. According to the film’s premise, some of the symbols conceal a binary code that appears to come from outside the historical period in which the artifacts were created.

Three thousand years later, a super-AI system has transformed human society. As humanity increasingly relies on algorithms, a global crisis emerges. An archaeologist eventually discovers that the key to solving the crisis may lie in seven ancient symbols found on Sanxingdui bronzeware.

AI Becomes Part of the Production Process

Unlike conventional films that primarily use AI for individual visual effects or post-production tasks, “Sanxingdui: Future Past” was generated using AI throughout a substantial part of its production process.

The film was created through Boka Film Cloud Studio. All of its characters are original digital figures, and the production does not use digital replicas of real actors.

According to the production team, AI was responsible for generation and execution, while the creative concept, artistic decisions and overall production judgment remained under the control of Bona AIGMS and its filmmaking team, following a film-industry production workflow.

That distinction is significant because the film is being presented not simply as a movie that incorporates AI tools, but as an experiment in an AI-native production model.

Ancient Civilization Meets a Future Dominated by AI

Visually, the film brings iconic Sanxingdui artifacts to the screen in a hyper-realistic style.

The Bronze Sacred Tree, Bronze Standing Figure and Bronze Mask with protruding eyes are among the cultural elements incorporated into the story. The filmmakers also use artistic imagination to reconstruct scenes associated with the ancient Shu civilization before extending the narrative into a futuristic world and outer space.

The result is a science-fiction story spanning thousands of years, connecting an archaeological mystery from ancient China with questions surrounding humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence.

AI Is Also a Theme of the Story

One of the more distinctive aspects of the film is that AI is not merely a production technology.

It is also central to the story itself.

The film imagines a future in which a super-AI system becomes deeply integrated into human society. As people increasingly hand decisions over to algorithms, a crisis forces humanity to reconsider how much control it should surrender to technology.

The ancient Sanxingdui symbols therefore serve as more than a mystery at the center of the plot. They become a narrative bridge between an ancient civilization and questions about the future of artificial intelligence.
