Tesla’s “Flying” Roadster Targets 2028 Production After Dramatic Demonstration
Tesla has unveiled its long-awaited second-generation Roadster, showcasing an electric sports car that combines ambitious performance targets with an unusual aerial demonstration. At an event held in Texas on October 15, CEO Elon Musk said production is planned to begin in 2028.
The presentation brought renewed attention to a vehicle first announced in 2017 and delayed several times since. Its latest demonstration also reignited debate over whether advanced propulsion technology could eventually bring flying-car capabilities to consumer vehicles.

Special Propulsion Technology Takes Center Stage
Reports from the presentation described a system involving cold-gas thrusters associated with SpaceX technology, alongside fans and underbody suction technology. During the demonstration, the vehicle performed specialized maneuvers, including driving along a steep ramp, briefly lifting off the ground, rotating in the air and landing.
Musk has discussed the possibility of incorporating SpaceX-inspired propulsion technology into the Roadster for years. The latest presentation offered a more visible demonstration of that concept, although it does not establish that the car can operate as a conventional flying vehicle in everyday conditions.
Important details remain unclear, including the system’s practical operating limits, flight duration, safety safeguards and whether the demonstrated capabilities will be available on production models.
Extreme Acceleration Claims Require Verification
Tesla has promoted ambitious performance targets for the new Roadster. During the presentation, the car was shown accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in approximately one second. The company has also cited a top-speed target exceeding 230 mph.
These figures reinforce the Roadster’s positioning as an extreme-performance electric sports car. However, manufacturer claims should be distinguished from independently verified production-car results. Battery output, tire traction, vehicle weight, test conditions and measurement methods can all affect performance.
Final specifications and independent testing will be needed to establish how the production vehicle performs under clearly defined conditions.
Production Planned for 2028 After Years of Delays
Musk said Tesla plans to begin production of the new Roadster in 2028. Before that can happen, the company will need to complete engineering validation, prepare its supply chain, finalize manufacturing processes and meet applicable regulatory requirements.
The project’s history has made observers cautious about its latest timeline. Tesla first announced the next-generation Roadster in 2017 and subsequently revised its expected schedule several times. As a result, 2028 should be regarded as the company’s current production target rather than a guaranteed delivery date.
Pricing, final equipment levels across different versions and delivery arrangements will also influence customer demand. For reservation holders, confirmed specifications and formal sales terms will ultimately matter more than the spectacle of a demonstration.
Safety and Regulation Remain Major Challenges
The Roadster’s aerial maneuvers have attracted attention, but any vehicle capable of leaving the ground raises questions beyond those associated with conventional road cars. Road-vehicle certification does not automatically authorize aircraft-like operations, and the legal use of such capabilities would depend on applicable regulations and approvals.
Reliability, emergency safeguards, operating conditions and suitable locations would also need to be addressed. Demonstrating a maneuver under controlled conditions is only one step toward developing a safe, commercially viable product.
The second-generation Roadster represents an ambitious effort by Tesla to push the boundaries of electric-car engineering. Whether production begins as planned in 2028, and whether its unusual propulsion features make it into the final consumer model, will remain key questions as the project moves toward its next stage.
