dexinwin China produced a dramatic comeback to win the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Monday, overturning a deficit against Japan on the final leg and setting a new Asian record.
The Chinese quartet of Xu Haibo, Fei Liwei, Pan Zhanle and Zhang Zhanshuo finished in 7 minutes 00.17 seconds, breaking the previous Asian record of 7:00.91. Japan took silver, while South Korea won bronze.
The victory was China's first Asian Games gold medal in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay since 2010.
Zhang Zhanshuo Completes the Comeback
Japan controlled much of the final and held a 1.89-second advantage when Zhang Zhanshuo entered the pool for the anchor leg.
The Chinese teenager gradually closed the gap during the final 200 meters. Japan still had the lead after the first 150 meters of the final leg, but Zhang accelerated dramatically over the closing stretch.
He eventually overtook Japan and touched the wall first, completing one of the most dramatic finishes of the swimming competition.
Zhang's split of 1:42.92 was the fastest of the eight swimmers in the final. He recovered 2.77 seconds on the Japanese anchor and brought China home 0.88 seconds ahead.
Strong Performance from the Entire Quartet
The Chinese team opened with Xu Haibo, who completed his leg in 1:46.27. Fei Liwei followed with 1:46.74 before Pan Zhanle produced a strong third leg in 1:44.24.
Despite Japan maintaining the overall lead heading into the final exchange, China's consistent pace kept the gap within reach.
Zhang then delivered the decisive performance, turning the race around in the closing stages and securing both the gold medal and the Asian record.

Pan Zhanle — 1:44.24
Zhang Zhanshuo — 1:42.92
The combined time of 7:00.17 improved the previous Asian record by 0.74 seconds.
A Milestone for Chinese Swimming
The gold medal added another highlight to China's strong performance in the swimming pool at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The relay victory was particularly significant because China had waited 16 years to reclaim the men's 4x200m freestyle relay title at the Asian Games.
For Zhang Zhanshuo, the victory also provided a memorable breakthrough on the continental stage. His final-leg comeback demonstrated both his speed and ability to perform under pressure against a Japanese team that had led for most of the race.
