Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen has withdrawn from the 2026 Wuhan Open because of a right shoulder injury and physical fatigue following a demanding stretch of competition. The announcement came on October 12, just one day after she won the China Open women’s singles title, becoming the first Chinese player to claim the championship in the tournament’s 20-year history.

Zheng Cites Shoulder Injury and Physical Fatigue
In a statement, Zheng said she was disappointed to miss the Wuhan Open, a tournament that holds special significance for her because Wuhan is where her tennis dream began.
She also described the event as an important milestone in her career, noting that the Wuhan Open was where she made a breakthrough at the WTA 1000 level.
Since returning from injury, Zheng has played a demanding schedule over the past month and a half, competing at the US Open, the Billie Jean King Cup and the China Open. She said the continuous competition had left her physically exhausted.
After considering her right shoulder injury and recovery needs, Zheng decided to withdraw from this year’s tournament. She expressed hope that she would return to Wuhan next year in better condition and ready to compete.
Historic China Open Victory
The withdrawal announcement followed a major milestone in Zheng’s career. On October 11, she defeated Russian player Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the China Open final to secure her first WTA 1000 title.
The victory made Zheng the first Chinese player to win the women’s singles title at the China Open since the tournament began 20 years ago. Entering the event as a wildcard, she won seven consecutive matches to complete an impressive run in Beijing.
The triumph marked a significant comeback for Zheng after a period disrupted by injury and recovery. However, the physical demands of her recent matches appear to have complicated her plans for the remainder of the Asian hard-court season.
Wuhan Open Organisers Express Support
The Wuhan Open organising committee said it understood and respected Zheng’s decision to withdraw.
The committee described Zheng as an outstanding player developed in Wuhan and a source of pride for Hubei province. It also expressed its hope that she would recover fully and return to the tournament in better condition next year.
Organisers said any adjustments to the tournament schedule would be announced separately and thanked fans for their understanding and support.
Recovery Takes Priority as Schedule Comes Under Scrutiny
Zheng’s withdrawal highlights the physical challenges professional tennis players face during tightly packed tournament schedules. For an athlete returning from injury and coming off a major title win, balancing competition with recovery is particularly important.
Although her absence will disappoint local fans who had hoped to see her compete in her home city, her China Open victory has demonstrated that she remains capable of competing at the highest level.
Attention will now turn to the recovery of her right shoulder and her plans for upcoming tournaments. While withdrawing from the Wuhan Open is an unfortunate setback, prioritising her health could prove crucial to maintaining her long-term competitiveness on the professional tour.
