dexinwin NAGOYA, Japan, Sept. 19, 2026— The 20th Asian Games officially opened in Nagoya on Saturday, bringing athletes from across Asia together for a ceremony centered on culture, technology and the idea of unity through sport.
Held at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, the opening ceremony marked the formal beginning of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, which will run through October 4. The event is being staged under the theme“HEART BEAT Aichi-Nagoya,”with the concept using the heartbeat as a symbol of connection among athletes, spectators and people across Asia.
A Ceremony Built Around Unity
The ceremony was directed by Nagoya-born filmmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi. Organizers said the program was designed to reflect the character of Aichi and Nagoya while creating a shared sense of excitement among participants from across the continent.
A large heart-shaped stage became one of the central visual elements of the ceremony, reinforcing the theme of bringing different countries and cultures together through sport.
The program also combined Japanese cultural elements with modern technology and large-scale performances. The Japanese national anthem and flag-raising ceremony were followed by the athletes' parade, with delegations representing countries and regions across Asia entering the stadium.
Emperor Naruhito formally declared the Games open, with Empress Masako and senior international sports officials attending the ceremony.
More Than 11,000 Athletes Expected
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games feature43 sports and 71 disciplines, with469 gold medalsavailable. Around 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions are expected to take part, making the Asian Games one of the largest multi-sport events in the world.
The competition will extend beyond Nagoya and Aichi, with some events being held in other parts of Japan. The Games will use 54 competition venues, reflecting the scale of the event and the host region's existing sporting infrastructure.
China has sent a delegation of more than 800 athletes and is among the largest teams participating in the Games. Athletes from across Asia will compete in traditional Olympic disciplines as well as sports with strong regional roots, including kabaddi and sepak takraw. Esports and several other newer disciplines are also part of the program.
Competition Started Before the Opening Ceremony
Although the opening ceremony took place on September 19, some competitions had already begun because of the packed schedule.
Basketball, football and other tournaments started before the formal opening, allowing organizers to fit all events into the 16-day Games period. For example, the men's basketball tournament began on September 10, while its semifinals were played on September 18.
The situation is not unusual for a major multi-sport event. The opening ceremony remains the symbolic start of the Games, even when selected competitions have to begin earlier.
A New Chapter for Aichi-Nagoya
The opening ceremony also represents a major moment for Japan, which is hosting the Asian Games for the third time after Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.
For Aichi and Nagoya, the event provides an opportunity to showcase the region's culture, technology and sporting facilities to audiences across Asia.
The Games will continue until October 4, when the closing ceremony will once again be held at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
Over the next two weeks, attention will shift from the opening spectacle to competition itself, as athletes compete for medals across dozens of sports.
For the organizers, the central message of the opening ceremony was clear: despite differences in language, culture and sporting traditions, the athletes gathered in Nagoya share a common stage — and, in the words of the Games' concept, a common heartbeat.
