Iran Says No New Talks Planned With US in New York as Diplomatic Uncertainty Persists

September 28, 2026— Iran has said that its delegation currently has no plans to hold a new round of negotiations with the United States in New York, contradicting recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump that Washington expected talks with Tehran to continue this week.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency, citing a source close to the Iranian delegation, reported that the delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York had no plans for negotiations with the United States. The statement came after Trump said he expected further discussions with Iran.

The latest Iranian position does not necessarily mean that diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Washington have ended. Iran has previously communicated its position to the United States through Qatari mediators and is waiting for an official response from Washington. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to leave New York and return to Iran on Tuesday.

The disagreement comes amid continuing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and the broader conflict in the region. Iran has previously said it could work toward reopening the strategically important waterway if the United States reduces military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran has also linked further negotiations to conditions involving a regional ceasefire and economic pressure on Iran.

Washington has taken a different position on the Iranian proposal. Trump has rejected Tehran’s latest offer while simultaneously indicating that negotiations could continue. U.S. officials have also challenged some of Iran’s conditions concerning the Strait of Hormuz and the sequence of steps required before broader negotiations could resume.

The two sides have nevertheless maintained indirect diplomatic contacts. Earlier in the week, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with Qatar involved in transmitting messages between the two sides. Reports described the contacts as part of efforts to explore a possible diplomatic path forward.

Iran’s latest statement therefore appears to concern the immediate possibility of another round of negotiations in New York rather than a complete rejection of diplomacy. Araghchi has previously indicated that Tehran remains open to diplomatic engagement, although Iranian officials have emphasized that any further progress depends on Washington’s response and on the conditions surrounding the conflict.

The next stage of the diplomatic process will depend on several issues, including whether Washington formally responds to Iran’s proposals, whether mediators can continue carrying messages between the two sides, and whether the two governments can narrow their differences over sanctions, military pressure, a regional ceasefire and the Strait of Hormuz.

For now, the public positions of Tehran and Washington remain notably different. Iran says there is no new U.S.-Iran negotiation scheduled in New York, while Trump expects further discussions. The diplomatic channel has not necessarily been closed, but whether it can develop into another formal round of talks remains uncertain.
