China’s smartphone market is entering one of its busiest flagship seasons as the National Day holiday approaches. Since September, Apple, vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and HONOR have rolled out major new devices, while Huawei is preparing to launch its Mate 90 series on October 1. With multiple flagship products arriving around the Mid-Autumn and National Day shopping period, a major “National Day smartphone battle” has already begun.
Compared with previous years, smartphone makers have accelerated their flagship launch schedules. Products that might traditionally have arrived in October are appearing earlier, with several major brands unveiling devices in late September. HONOR launched its Magic9 series on September 28, iQOO introduced the iQOO 16 on September 29, and Huawei is scheduled to unveil the Mate 90 series at 10 a.m. on October 1, with sales beginning at 12:08 p.m.
The result is an unusually concentrated competition for consumers during the National Day holiday.
Huawei Enters the Battle on National Day
Huawei’s Mate 90 launch has become one of the most closely watched events of the season.
Huawei confirmed on September 29 that the Mate 90 series will be officially unveiled at 10 a.m. on October 1. The company is expected to announce pricing during the launch event and begin sales the same day. The timing makes Huawei one of the last major manufacturers to unveil its annual mainstream flagship phone lineup.
The timing also places Huawei’s new flagship directly at the beginning of the National Day holiday, when consumers have more time for shopping, visiting retail stores and considering smartphone upgrades.
Huawei, however, is entering a market already crowded with new competitors.
Apple and Chinese Brands Enter the Final Stage
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro series has already entered the market, while Chinese manufacturers have concentrated their major launches in September.
vivo, OPPO and Xiaomi introduced new flagship products in the second half of September, followed by HONOR’s Magic9 series. Market reports indicate that September 2026 has become one of the most crowded smartphone launch periods in recent years.
HONOR officially launched the Magic9 series in Beijing on September 28, including the Magic9 Pro Max, Magic9 and Magic9 Super Energy Edition. The company lists starting prices of 6,499 yuan, 4,999 yuan and 4,499 yuan respectively. HONOR is placing particular emphasis on imaging and has partnered with ARRI to bring elements of professional cinematic imaging into its smartphones.

On September 29, iQOO launched the iQOO 16, focusing heavily on performance and gaming. The phone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Super Elite Gen 6 platform and a 2K 165Hz high-refresh-rate display, with a subsidized starting price of 5,499 yuan in China.
The competing manufacturers are therefore pursuing different strategies, from photography and gaming performance to AI, battery life and foldable designs.
Pricing Has Become a Major Variable
One of the defining features of this year’s flagship competition is pricing pressure.
Changes in component costs, including memory prices, have affected smartphone manufacturers’ pricing strategies. At the same time, China’s smartphone market has become increasingly mature, with longer replacement cycles and stronger competition for existing users. Simply upgrading specifications is becoming less effective as a reason to replace an existing phone.
Manufacturers consequently face a difficult balance.
Hardware costs are rising, but prices cannot increase too aggressively while consumers remain sensitive to their budgets.
This makes pricing particularly important during the National Day sales period.
Premium models continue to move toward higher price segments, while upper-midrange flagships must balance performance, cameras, battery life and AI capabilities.
Competition Is Shifting From Specifications to Experience
Another clear trend in this year’s launches is the declining importance of pure specification races.
Comparing processors, memory capacity and camera megapixels alone is becoming less effective as manufacturers seek broader product differentiation.
AI has emerged as one of the central battlegrounds.
OPPO’s ColorOS 17, for example, emphasizes AIOS, cross-device connectivity, AI productivity and security features. HONOR has also integrated AI functions such as AI call assistance into the Magic9 series.
Imaging remains another major battlefield.
HONOR’s Magic9 series goes beyond camera hardware by incorporating ARRI-related cinematic imaging technologies and workflows, attempting to turn the smartphone into a more comprehensive content-creation tool.
At the chipset level, the industry is also entering a new generation of technology. MediaTek unveiled its Dimensity 9600 Pro and 9600M flagship 5G chips in September, based on a 2nm process and designed to improve performance, efficiency and on-device AI capabilities.
The National Day Holiday Is a Key Sales Window
The concentration of launches around the end of September and beginning of October is closely linked to the holiday shopping cycle.
The National Day holiday provides consumers with more time for shopping and in-store experiences, while manufacturers can use the period to combine new-product launches with trade-in programs and promotional campaigns.
The competition is therefore not simply about which company holds the most impressive launch event. It is also a battle overpricing, distribution, inventory, marketing and consumers’ limited upgrade budgets.
The Real Test Comes After the Launches
By late September, manufacturers have already moved much of their annual flagship competition into the National Day shopping period.
But a larger number of new phones does not necessarily mean consumers will buy more devices.
For users who already own capable smartphones, the key question is whether improvements in processors, cameras, displays, battery life or AI provide enough real-world value to justify an upgrade.
That means the manufacturers are competing not merely for attention during launch events, but for actual consumer spending.
Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo and HONOR are approaching the flagship market from different directions. Their sales performance, channel feedback and user reviews after the National Day holiday will provide a clearer picture of how this unusually crowded smartphone season develops.
For consumers, the large number of new devices means more choices — but also makes comparisons of pricing, cameras, battery life, performance, software and after-sales service increasingly important.
In 2026, the smartphone market is gradually moving beyond the question of“whose specifications are higher?”
The more important question is becoming“which new phone can give consumers a convincing reason to upgrade?”
The answer will become clearer after the National Day holiday.
