JERUSALEM —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has provided an account of a dramatic incident aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, saying that one pilot stabbed another in the cockpit before a passenger and a crew member intervened.

Flydubai flight FZ1073 was eventually diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. More than 170 passengers were on board, most of them Israeli nationals. The precise motive behind the cockpit confrontation remains under investigation.

Violent Incident Erupts in the Cockpit

The Boeing 737 operating flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport on September 30 when a serious incident unfolded in the cockpit.

According to Reuters, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain during a confrontation. The aircraft then experienced a dramatic loss of altitude and issued an emergency signal before diverting toward Saudi Arabia.

Flight data cited by Reuters showed that the aircraft descended nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, alarming passengers in the cabin.

Netanyahu Describes What Happened

After the incident, Netanyahu released a video statement describing what he had learned from one of the passengers involved in stopping the attack.

According to Netanyahu's account, the aircraft began spinning and descending rapidly after the confrontation in the cockpit. The injured captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing a passenger and a crew member to enter and confront the attacker.

Netanyahu said additional crew members subsequently entered the cockpit and helped regain control of the aircraft.

Reuters also reported that off-duty pilots who were traveling as passengers helped after the cockpit confrontation was brought under control.

Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia

Rather than continuing toward Israel, the aircraft diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

The plane landed safely, and all passengers and crew members were confirmed safe. The suspected attacker was taken into custody by Saudi authorities and is being questioned. Both pilots were injured and received medical treatment.

Flydubai confirmed that an altercation had occurred in the cockpit and said the flight crew regained control of the aircraft before diverting and landing safely. The airline said all passengers and crew were safe and that it was cooperating with authorities investigating the incident.

Terror Attack Classification Remains Under Investigation

Netanyahu described the incident as an extremely serious security event and said the pilot involved appeared to have attempted to bring down the aircraft.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz described the incident as a possible attempted terrorist attack. However, that characterization has not yet been established as the final official finding. Saudi authorities are investigating the incident, while Flydubai has said that the cause and motive of the confrontation remain unclear.

The confirmed facts so far are that a violent confrontation occurred inside the cockpit, the aircraft suffered a severe emergency descent, and the flight was diverted and landed safely in Saudi Arabia. The exact motive and legal classification of the incident remain unresolved.

Incident Raises Fresh Aviation Security Questions

The incident has also drawn renewed attention to cockpit security and the risks posed when serious violence occurs between flight crew members.

The cockpit is one of the most tightly controlled areas of a commercial aircraft. A violent confrontation between pilots can potentially affect aircraft control, communications and navigation.

In this case, passengers and crew members intervened, while other pilots on board reportedly assisted in stabilizing the aircraft. Their actions were followed by an emergency diversion and safe landing in Saudi Arabia.

Investigators are now expected to examine the sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation, the actions of the crew and passengers, and the motive of the suspected attacker.

For the passengers aboard FZ1073, what began as a routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv became a serious mid-air emergency. The aircraft ultimately landed safely, preventing the incident from developing into a much larger aviation disaster.
