Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed an unusual personal detail during the plenary session of the 23rd Valdai International Discussion Club on October 1: his grandchildren speak Chinese and could eventually serve as interpreters for him.
Speaking in Moscow, Putin said that his grandchildren know Chinese well enough to work as his interpreters in the future. The lighthearted remark came during a broader discussion about his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping and communication between the two leaders.
Putin Recalls Communicating With Xi Without Interpreters
Putin also described an occasion when he and Xi were able to understand each other without using interpreters.
According to Putin, the two leaders were briefly together during an event in India and found that they could sometimes understand each other through a word, gesture or the broader context, despite neither speaking the other's language fluently.
Putin noted that he does not currently speak Chinese, while Xi does not speak Russian. He then added that his grandchildren speak Chinese and joked that they could serve as his interpreters.
The personal anecdote provided a lighter moment during a forum otherwise dominated by discussions of international politics, security and relations among major powers.

Putin Has Mentioned His Grandchildren Learning Chinese Before
This is not the first time Putin has publicly referred to his grandchildren's Chinese-language abilities.
Russian media have previously reported that Putin said one of his granddaughters had a Chinese caregiver from Beijing and could speak Chinese fluently. His latest comments at the Valdai forum again drew attention to the family's connection with Chinese-language education.
Putin has generally kept details about his grandchildren private, including their names and personal lives. In an earlier public appearance, he explained that he wanted them to have relatively normal lives and avoid excessive public attention because of their family background.
China-Russia Relations Provide the Broader Context
Putin's comments about Chinese language skills came against the backdrop of continued close diplomatic engagement between Moscow and Beijing.
On October 1, Reuters reported that Putin expressed optimism in a letter to Xi that a planned meeting at the upcoming APEC summit in China could further strengthen Russia-China relations. China's Foreign Ministry said that strategic guidance from the two countries' leaders is an important political guarantee for the stable and long-term development of bilateral ties.
Putin has also discussed the possibility of a trilateral meeting involving Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump, saying that such a meeting would require an appropriate agenda and framework.
Against that broader diplomatic backdrop, his comment about his grandchildren speaking Chinese offered a more personal perspective on the growing interaction between Russia and China.
Language as a Reflection of Growing Exchanges
The remarks also highlight the broader role of Chinese-language education in Russia.
As economic, educational, tourism and people-to-people exchanges between Russia and China have developed, learning Chinese has gained greater practical relevance for Russians interested in business, employment and communication with China.
Putin's comments, however, do not constitute a new language-education policy, nor did he provide statistics on the scale of Chinese-language education in Russia. His personal family experience should therefore not automatically be interpreted as representing a broader national trend.
A Personal Remark With a Wider Context
On the surface, Putin's comment about his grandchildren was simply a family anecdote. Its broader significance comes from the setting in which it was made.
Relations between countries are often discussed through diplomacy, trade and strategic agreements. But international relations can also reach into everyday life through education, travel and language.
For Putin, his grandchildren's ability to speak Chinese means that the next generation of his family has gained a direct linguistic connection with China. For observers, the more interesting aspect of the comment may be what it says about the increasingly close contact between the two societies.
The remark also added a distinctly human moment to a major international forum:while leaders discuss relations between countries, the next generation is learning each other's languages.
