Taiwanese television host and entertainer Kevin Tsai, widely known as Kang Kang-yong, has come under intense scrutiny after appearing at the campaign headquarters launch of Shen Po-yang, a Democratic Progressive Party candidate for Taipei mayor.

The appearance has triggered strong reactions across Chinese social media and prompted a commercial partner to remove promotional content involving Tsai.

The controversy is particularly sensitive because Shen has previously been placed on the mainland's list of “Taiwan independence” hardliners and has been subject to sanctions by mainland authorities. Chinese police also announced in 2025 that Shen was under investigation for alleged crimes involving separatism.

Tsai Appears at Campaign Headquarters

Taiwanese media reported that Tsai appeared at Shen's campaign headquarters launch on October 4.

Footage showed Tsai sitting in the front section of the venue and holding campaign support materials carrying the slogan “Taipei Moves Forward.”

The images quickly spread on Chinese social-media platforms, where the topic of Tsai appearing at the campaign event became a major trending discussion.

When questioned by reporters, Tsai reportedly said he had come “to see for himself” and wanted to hear different opinions. His management team later explained that the appearance was related to preliminary research for potentially interviewing the candidates for Taipei mayor.

The explanation means that, based on currently available information, it would be premature to state categorically that Tsai had formally endorsed Shen's campaign. However, his presence at the event was clearly interpreted by many mainland observers as a political gesture.

Why Shen’s Political Status Matters

The controversy is closely connected to Shen's status in mainland China.

On October 14, 2024, China's Taiwan Affairs Office announced that Shen had been added to its list of “Taiwan independence” hardliners and that sanctions would be imposed on him.

In October 2025, Chongqing police announced an investigation into Shen over alleged crimes involving separatism.

Chinese authorities have accused Shen of engaging in activities associated with separatism, including through the organization known as the Kuma Academy.

Shen and Taiwan's authorities hold different positions from Beijing regarding these accusations and the legal measures taken against him.

That political divide has made public appearances at Shen's campaign events particularly sensitive.

Commercial Partner Moves Quickly

The controversy soon spilled into the commercial sphere.

Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer that had previously worked with Tsai on promotional content, issued a statement on October 5 saying that the company firmly adheres to the one-China principle and opposes separatist activities.

The company said Tsai had participated only in previous promotional cooperation and was not its brand ambassador. It also said that all related content had been removed and that the company would strengthen background and position reviews of future partners.

The move represents one of the clearest commercial consequences of the controversy so far.

“Zero Tolerance” Reflected Mainly in Public and Market Reaction

There is currently no reliable evidence that mainland authorities have announced a new formal sanction against Tsai himself over the incident.

It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the episode as an official “zero-tolerance” measure against Tsai.

A more precise description is thatthe appearance has triggered strong public backlash in mainland China, while a commercial partner has moved quickly to distance itself from the controversy.

The episode illustrates how political activity by public figures can have direct commercial consequences when those figures operate across politically sensitive markets.

New Risks for Celebrity Endorsements

Tsai has maintained a long-standing presence in Chinese-language entertainment and has previously participated in commercial projects involving mainland audiences.

The controversy therefore raises a broader question for entertainment companies and advertisers: Can a celebrity's personal political activities remain completely separate from commercial partnerships?

For brands, celebrity marketing is no longer simply a question of audience reach and publicity. Public image, consumer sentiment, political sensitivity and market-specific risks can all become part of the decision-making process.

The rapid response from Leapmotor suggests that companies may prefer to limit potential political controversy before it affects their broader brand image.

Cross-Strait Issues Again Spill Into Entertainment

Beijing has repeatedly stated that it adheres to the one-China principle and opposes separatist activities advocating Taiwan independence.

In September, China's Taiwan Affairs Office again said that authorities would take necessary measures against individuals on the mainland's list of Taiwan-independence hardliners.

Against that background, Tsai's appearance at Shen's campaign event has become more than a conventional celebrity controversy. It demonstrates how political disputes across the Taiwan Strait can increasingly spill over into entertainment, advertising and commercial cooperation.

For public figures, political participation may be a matter of personal choice. But for celebrities with commercial activities across different markets, such choices can also carry tangible professional and business consequences.

Whether the controversy will lead to further changes in commercial partnerships or entertainment projects remains to be seen.
