Chen Chien-Chou Hospital Room Photo Sparks Debate as NTU Hospital Responds

Taiwanese entertainer and basketball executive Chen Chien-Chou has drawn public attention after sharing a photo taken during his hospitalization, showing several relatives and friends gathered around his hospital bed. The photo sparked discussion over visitor limits in intensive care units, prompting National Taiwan University Hospital (NTU Hospital) to remind patients and families to follow its medical and infection-control regulations.

Chen, 49, was hospitalized on September 15 after experiencing an acute myocardial infarction while watching a basketball game. He underwent an emergency cardiac catheterization procedure and received a stent. After spending time in the intensive care unit, he was transferred to a regular ward on September 17. He later posted a message thanking his family, friends, medical team and supporters for their concern.

One of the photos accompanying his message showed Chen in his hospital bed surrounded by several visitors, including his wife, singer Fan Wei-chi, and singer Wang Leehom. The visitors were wearing protective hospital clothing. Wang was also seen holding a hospital urinal while posing for the photograph.

The image quickly attracted discussion online, with some questioning whether the number of people shown in the room was consistent with NTU Hospital's normal intensive-care visitation rules.

NTU Hospital spokesperson Chen Yen-yuan responded on September 18 without publicly commenting on whether the individuals in the photograph had received special permission. Instead, the hospital emphasized that all patients and their families should cooperate with medical procedures and visitor controls to help maintain a safe environment free from unnecessary disruption and infection-control concerns.

According to NTU Hospital's published visitor guidelines, visits to its intensive care units are normally permitted between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Visitor numbers are limited to two people per bed, with only one visitor allowed to enter at a time. Visitors are required to wear masks and hospital-provided protective clothing.

The hospital's rules also state that special circumstances may require assistance and guidance from nursing staff. The guidelines are designed to reduce infection risks and minimize disruptions in areas where critically ill patients are receiving treatment.

The photograph also prompted comments from critical-care physician Chen Chih-chin, who said intensive-care visitation is generally restricted to two people and that hospitals may make exceptions depending on a patient's circumstances. His comments represented his personal professional view and were not an official statement that Chen's visitors had violated hospital rules.

The controversy comes shortly after Chen's medical emergency. In his September 17 message, Chen said he had experienced severe chest discomfort and breathing difficulties before being taken to hospital. He expressed gratitude to the medical team and said the experience had made him reconsider the importance of rest and health.

Chen also used the incident to remind the public to pay attention to symptoms associated with heart attacks, including persistent chest pressure or pain, shortness of breath, sweating and discomfort radiating to areas such as the back, neck or jaw.

For now, Chen has been transferred from intensive care to a regular ward, while the discussion surrounding his hospital photograph has largely focused on visitor management and infection-control rules rather than his medical condition.

NTU Hospital's response emphasized a broader principle applicable to all patients and visitors: hospital regulations are intended to protect patients, medical staff and other people receiving care, particularly in sensitive areas such as intensive care units.
