The 77th International Astronautical Congress opened on October 5 in Antalya, Türkiye, bringing together representatives from the global space community to discuss emerging technologies, future space missions and international cooperation.

Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut and deputy chief designer of the country's manned space program, attended the event and outlined the latest developments in China's human spaceflight efforts. He also discussed international cooperation involving China's space station, the training of foreign astronauts and the country's plans for future lunar exploration.

One of the major topics highlighted by Yang was the international use of China's space station.

Yang said China's space station will serve as a space science experiment platform open to scientists from around the world. Future cooperation could cover scientific research, astronaut training, opportunities for spaceflight and science education, according to his remarks.

The upcoming participation of foreign astronauts in China's space station program has attracted particular attention.

Two Pakistani candidates were previously selected as China's first foreign astronaut trainees and came to China for training. Yang said the two Pakistani reserve astronauts have performed very well throughout their training and are currently conducting joint training with Chinese astronauts.

According to the current plan, one of the Pakistani astronauts will participate in a short-duration mission as a payload specialist. The development marks another step in China's efforts to expand international cooperation in human spaceflight, moving beyond exchanges toward practical cooperation involving space missions and scientific research.

Yang also emphasized China's willingness to work with other countries in the future.

He said China hopes to actively engage with countries around the world and seek opportunities for cooperation. The Chinese space station is expected to provide additional opportunities for international researchers and astronauts to participate in scientific experiments, training and other space-related activities.

Lunar exploration was another important topic addressed by Yang.

He said China will continue its work in lunar science and development and plans to build a lunar research station. China also hopes to strengthen exchanges with other countries and explore opportunities for international cooperation in this area.

China's human spaceflight program has undergone significant development over the past three decades, progressing from its first crewed mission to the construction and long-term operation of a space station.

Yang Liwei played a historic role in that development. In October 2003, he flew aboard the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft, becoming the first Chinese citizen to travel into space. He has since moved into technical and management roles within China's human spaceflight program, including work related to astronaut selection and training.

Yang's appearance in Antalya provides an important glimpse into the next stage of China's space ambitions.

From welcoming foreign astronauts aboard its space station to preparing for future lunar scientific research and the construction of a lunar research facility, China is increasingly emphasizing international cooperation as part of its broader space exploration efforts.

His remarks also highlight a wider trend in space exploration: as missions become increasingly complex and ambitious, cooperation among countries, scientists and space agencies may become an increasingly important part of humanity's efforts to explore Earth orbit, the Moon and eventually deeper space.
