Mao Dongdong, a member of the Chinese delegation visiting North Korea, paid tribute to his great-uncle Mao Anying at a memorial site in Hoedong, North Korea, during a five-day commemorative and exchange visit by a Chinese youth cadre delegation.
Mao Dongdong, a student at the People's Liberation Army National University of Defense Technology, poured a ceremonial offering and placed mooncakes brought from his hometown in front of the statue of Mao Anying, who was killed during the Korean War.
The tribute took place on September 15 at the Chinese People's Volunteers Martyrs Cemetery in Hoechang. Mao Dongdong and other members of the delegation observed a solemn ceremony honoring Chinese People's Volunteer Army soldiers who died during the Korean War. The delegation presented a flower basket, bowed and observed a moment of silence.
Mao Dongdong said that the Mid-Autumn Festival was approaching and that they deeply missed Mao Anying. He added that the younger generation would continue to study and work hard and contribute to China's national development and military modernization.
The visit was part of the third Chinese Youth Cadre Delegation's trip to North Korea from September 14 to 18. Organized by China's Ministry of Veterans Affairs, the delegation consisted of 48 young officials and representatives selected from central government departments, the People's Liberation Army and various provincial and municipal governments.
During the five-day visit, the delegation traveled to several locations connected with Chinese People's Volunteer Army history. It visited cemeteries in Hoechang, Kaesong and Anju, paid respects at the Sino-Korean Friendship Tower and toured the former headquarters of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army as well as the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum.
The delegation also held exchanges with North Korean representatives during the visit.

At the Hoechang cemetery, the delegation leader Li Jingxian, deputy director of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs' Memorial and International Cooperation Department, said the ceremony was intended to remember the Chinese People's Volunteer Army soldiers who died on the Korean battlefield.
He said the delegation should remember the contribution of the fallen soldiers, reflect on the suffering caused by war and value and protect peace.
Mao Anying, the eldest son of Mao Zedong, joined the Chinese People's Volunteer Army during the Korean War and was killed in November 1950 at the age of 28 while serving in Korea. He is buried at the Chinese People's Volunteer Army Martyrs Cemetery in Hoechang.
Mao Dongdong is the son of Mao Zedong's grandson Mao Xinyu. He has previously appeared publicly at family commemorative events. In April 2026, Mao Dongdong accompanied his family to Shaoshan in Hunan Province to pay respects to his great-grandparents. At that time, he said he had been serving in the military for four years and would continue working hard in his studies and training.
The latest visit comes as China and North Korea continue commemorative activities related to the history of the Korean War and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army.
During their exchanges with North Korean counterparts, members of the Chinese delegation expressed hope that the two sides would maintain close communication and cooperation and properly preserve memorial facilities dedicated to Chinese People's Volunteer Army soldiers in North Korea.
The tribute by Mao Dongdong at Mao Anying's statue added a personal dimension to the delegation's broader commemorative activities, connecting a younger generation with the historical memory of the Korean War and those who died during the conflict.
