China–North Korea New Yalu River Bridge Officially Opens After 12-Year Delay

The New Yalu River Bridge connecting Dandong in China's northeastern Liaoning Province with Sinuiju in North Korea officially opened on October 15, 2026. The two countries held an opening ceremony on Thursday, bringing a long-delayed cross-border infrastructure project into operation after more than a decade of postponements.

The bridge is expected to improve connectivity between the neighboring countries and support bilateral trade and transportation. China's Foreign Ministry previously described the project as an important infrastructure link that would promote economic and trade exchanges as well as people-to-people contact.

Three-Kilometer Bridge Connects Dandong and Sinuiju

The New Yalu River Bridge spans the Yalu River and links the Chinese border city of Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinuiju. The approximately three-kilometer structure features four lanes and is designed to provide a major road connection between the two countries.

Construction began in 2010, and the main bridge was completed around 2014. However, the project remained unused for years because supporting infrastructure on the North Korean side, including approach roads and customs facilities, had not been completed.

The prolonged delay meant that the bridge could not fulfill its intended role as a cross-border transport route. Its opening on October 15 marks a significant step toward putting the infrastructure into practical use.

The new crossing is expected to provide an additional route for road freight and could ease some pressure on existing border transport facilities.

New Route Expected to Support Bilateral Trade

China has long been North Korea's largest trading partner. The opening of the bridge is expected to improve the infrastructure available for transporting goods between the two countries, including heavy equipment, raw materials and other commercial cargo.

According to Reuters, China's exports to North Korea reached approximately $2.3 billion in 2025, an increase of around 25% from the previous year and the highest level in six years. However, exports remained below levels recorded before international sanctions against North Korea were tightened in 2017.

Analysts caution that the bridge's opening will not automatically return bilateral trade to pre-sanctions levels. Future trade growth will depend on a range of factors, including international sanctions, demand for goods, customs arrangements and the economic policies of both countries.

A New Step in Cross-Border Connectivity

The bridge's opening represents progress in infrastructure cooperation between Beijing and Pyongyang. Cross-border transportation, logistics and trade have remained important elements of their bilateral relationship.

Attention will now turn to how the crossing operates in practice, including freight volumes, customs efficiency and the development of supporting logistics services.

Details regarding daily traffic capacity, operating procedures and whether passenger services will be permitted have not been fully established in the reports available. The opening of the bridge does not automatically mean that all forms of cross-border travel will be available; actual movements will remain subject to the relevant border-control rules.

After years of delay, the New Yalu River Bridge has finally entered operation. Whether it can significantly expand trade, improve logistics and strengthen economic links between the border regions will become clearer as operational data and trade figures emerge.
