Iran’s New Defense Minister Warns US Against Renewed Military Action
Iran’s newly appointed Defense Minister, Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi, has issued a strong warning to the United States, saying Washington and its regional allies could suffer significant losses if the US resumes military strikes against Iran. The remarks underscore persistent tensions between Tehran and Washington and have renewed concerns over the possibility of further escalation in the Middle East.

Iran’s parliament approved Akhlaghi’s appointment on October 18, 2026. Following the vote, he warned that if the United States turned its military threats into action, the consequences would extend beyond Iran and could inflict serious damage on the US and the wider region. He also stressed that Iran was prepared for the possibility of another round of hostilities.
The appointment comes after a major change in Iran’s defense leadership. Akhlaghi’s predecessor, Aziz Nasirzadeh, was killed during US-Israeli strikes against Iran in February. The new defense minister has experience in Iran’s defense industry, including missile-related fields. His appointment is seen as a signal that Tehran intends to continue strengthening its defense capabilities amid continuing security concerns.
Discussion of possible renewed US military action against Iran has intensified in recent weeks. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that any new attack would be met with retaliation, warning that a wider conflict could threaten regional security and disrupt international energy markets. Meanwhile, the two countries remain divided over security issues, sanctions and the prospects for diplomatic negotiations.
Analysts say the warning serves both as a deterrent and as an attempt by Tehran to raise the potential cost of further military action. However, strong rhetoric does not necessarily mean that a new conflict is inevitable. The situation will depend on subsequent decisions by both governments, diplomatic engagement and developments across the region.
With tensions remaining high, whether Washington and Tehran can avoid another military confrontation could have significant implications for regional stability, energy transportation and global markets. Both sides continue to face the challenge of balancing security concerns with the possibility of a diplomatic solution.
