Apple’s newly releasediPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Maxare facing early reports of unexpected shutdowns and automatic restarts, with some users saying their devices generated “panic-full” logs after the incidents.

The reports emerged only days after the new Pro models went on sale on September 18, raising questions about whether the problem is related to software, hardware or a combination of factors.

Users Report Unexpected Restarts

According to reports from South Korea and overseas online communities, some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max owners have experienced sudden black screens followed by automatic restarts.

The incidents are commonly described as“Panic Full”, referring to a diagnostic log generated when an iPhone encounters a serious system-level error and restarts unexpectedly.

Some users said the problem occurred during the initial setup process, while others reported repeated restarts during normal use.

South Korean media reported that users had posted screenshots of “panic-full” logs in iPhone communities and forums shortly after purchasing their devices.

The reports do not currently establish how widespread the problem is.

Face ID Linked to Some Reported Cases

Some of the most specific reports involveFace ID.

Users have claimed that their iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max sometimes restarted after repeated Face ID authentication failures, including when opening protected content in financial or photo applications.

Similar reports have appeared overseas. One iPhone 18 Pro Max user on Reddit said the device restarted several times within the first day, including incidents involving Face ID and Apple Wallet. Other users reported multiple restarts even after resetting Face ID or restoring the software.

However, these user reports donot prove that Face ID is the root cause. The connection remains under investigation, and some reported restarts occurred during other activities.

Hardware or Software? Cause Remains Unclear

The most important question is what is causing the unexpected restarts.

At present, there is no confirmed evidence establishing a specific hardware defect in the iPhone 18 Pro.

Reports from service centers have also been inconsistent. Some users said they were told the problem could be hardware-related, while others were reportedly advised that the issue appeared to be software-related. Some customers said they were offered exchanges or refunds.

Apple Korea had not publicly provided a specific explanation for the reported Panic Full incidents as of September 20, according to MoneyToday.

That means it would be premature to conclude that the entire iPhone 18 Pro series has a hardware defect.

iPhone 18 Pro Just Reached Consumers

The timing has made the reports particularly noticeable.

Apple officially introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9. The new models use Apple'sA20 Pro chipand feature a redesigned vapor-chamber cooling system, a variable-aperture 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and other hardware upgrades.

The phones began reaching customers on September 18, meaning the current reports are based on a very early period of real-world use.

That makes it difficult to determine whether the incidents represent an isolated launch-day bug, a software compatibility problem or a broader hardware issue.

A Familiar Launch-Period Concern

The latest reports also recall similar unexpected-restart complaints involving earlier iPhone generations.

South Korean media noted that the iPhone 16 experienced reports of unexpected restarts around its launch, with Apple later addressing some restart-related problems through software updates.

Such incidents can sometimes be resolved through an operating-system update, although that possibility cannot yet be confirmed for the iPhone 18 Pro.

What iPhone 18 Pro Owners Can Do

For users experiencing repeated restarts, preserving the diagnostic information may help Apple and service providers identify the cause.

Users can check their iPhone's analytics data for files beginning with“panic-full”and keep records of when the restart occurred and what the phone was doing immediately beforehand.

Those experiencing repeated crashes should also back up important data and contact Apple or an authorized service provider, particularly if the device becomes unstable during normal use.

For now, the available evidence points to areported early-launch problem rather than a confirmed widespread hardware failure.

Apple's investigation and any future iOS updates will be important in determining whether the Panic Full reports are caused by a software bug, a hardware component, or a combination of factors.

For a smartphone that has only just reached consumers, the coming weeks will reveal whether the unexpected restarts remain isolated complaints or develop into a broader issue affecting the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
