Adequate Supply and Stable Prices: China’s Food Basket Set for the Mid-Autumn and National Day Holid

As the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays approach, China is taking measures to ensure adequate supplies of vegetables and other essential food products, while strengthening food-safety supervision to meet increased holiday demand.

According to the latest agricultural monitoring data, China currently has about108 million mu (approximately 7.2 million hectares) of vegetables under cultivation. Vegetable production in mid-September exceeded27 million tonnes, providing sufficient supply to meet demand during the Mid-Autumn Festival period.

Vegetable Production Adjusted for Holiday Demand

In Chenzhou, Hunan Province, vegetable producers have adjusted planting and harvesting schedules in advance to prepare for the holiday period. One local vegetable base has increased its average daily supply from about15,000 jin to around 30,000 jin, with leafy vegetables accounting for a major share of its output.

The vegetables are harvested and delivered on the same day, helping shorten the time between farms and consumers while maintaining freshness.

In Shawan, Xinjiang, mechanized harvesting is also being used for chili peppers. New varieties and improved planting methods are helping facilitate machine harvesting and reduce crop losses, further improving the efficiency of agricultural production.

Logistics and Storage Capacity Strengthened

Large agricultural wholesale markets and cold-chain facilities are also preparing for the expected increase in holiday consumption.

The measures are designed to keep agricultural products moving efficiently from production areas to major consumer markets and reduce the risk of supply disruptions during the holiday travel and shopping period.

For consumers, stable supply means that commonly purchased vegetables, meat, eggs, dairy products and seasonal fruits are expected to remain readily available during the holidays.

Food Safety Supervision Intensified

Alongside supply保障, Chinese authorities are strengthening food-safety supervision during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays.

A notice issued by the State Council Food Safety Office calls for stronger supervision of rice, flour, cooking oil, meat, eggs, dairy products, mooncakes, pastries, condiments and other seasonal foods. Authorities are also required to increase inspections of bulk agricultural products sold in markets.

Restaurants and catering businesses in tourist attractions, highway service areas and commercial complexes will also receive increased oversight. Regulators will focus on areas including food ingredient procurement, food additives, tableware sanitation and food safety in online catering services.

Authorities have additionally called for special inspections of popular holiday foods such as mooncakes and alcoholic beverages. Businesses found violating food-safety regulations will face investigation and penalties in accordance with the law.

A More Stable Holiday Food Market

With agricultural production, logistics, storage and food-safety supervision operating together, China is working to ensure that consumers have access to sufficient and safe food supplies throughout the holiday period.

The preparation also reflects the seasonal characteristics of holiday consumption: demand typically rises around major festivals, making coordination between agricultural producers, wholesale markets, retailers and regulators particularly important.

For ordinary consumers, the key expectation is straightforward—adequate supply, relatively stable prices and stronger food-safety controlsduring the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays.
