September 27, 2026— A traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival treat is gaining growing attention overseas. Ahead of this year’s festival, sales of Chinese-style mooncakes on the European Joybuy platform increased bymore than 16 times from the same period a month earlier, according to data cited by China Central Television.
The surge highlights the growing overseas interest in Chinese food and culture, as mooncakes increasingly move beyond Chinese communities and become a distinctive Chinese food product for international consumers.
European Mooncake Sales Rise More Than 16-Fold
Mooncakes have traditionally been associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of China’s most important traditional holidays.
For many years, overseas demand was concentrated largely among Chinese communities. But the expansion of cross-border e-commerce and growing international interest in Chinese culture are giving the traditional pastry a wider consumer base.
Data from the European Joybuy platform showed that sales of Chinese mooncakes surged by more than 16 times compared with the same period a month earlier ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The change suggests that mooncakes are gradually becoming more than a seasonal product for Chinese consumers overseas. For some international shoppers, they offer a way to discover Chinese flavors and learn about the cultural traditions surrounding the festival.
Mooncake Export Value Rises 42.7%
The growth in overseas interest is also reflected in China's export figures.

According to Guangzhou Customs data, the value of mooncakes monitored for export during the first eight months of 2026 reached49.765 million yuan, up42.7% year on year. Cantonese-style mooncakes remain an important export category, while their markets are expanding beyond traditional destinations in Southeast Asia toward Australia, New Zealand, Europe and North America.
Individual companies have also reported stronger overseas sales.
According to reports, Tao Tao Ju’s custard lava mooncakes recorded a 90% year-on-year increase in overseas sales this year. Some manufacturers have also introduced new flavors and formulations, including lava-filled, fruit and vegetable, and low-GI varieties to appeal to consumers in overseas markets.
Foreign Consumers Discover the Story Behind Mooncakes
The appeal of mooncakes overseas is not limited to their taste.
The round shape of a mooncake is traditionally associated with the full moon and family reunion during the Mid-Autumn Festival. For international consumers encountering the tradition for the first time, the food provides both a culinary experience and an introduction to Chinese culture.
Foreign visitors participating in mooncake-making activities in Shenzhen have learned about the ingredients, preparation process and cultural meaning behind the traditional pastry.
This combination of food and cultural storytelling has helped give mooncakes a distinctive appeal beyond Chinese communities.
From Festival Food to a Chinese-Themed Gift
The overseas market for mooncakes is also changing in terms of consumption scenarios.
In the past, overseas purchases were often closely linked to Chinese communities celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival. Today, some international consumers are buying mooncakes simply as a Chinese specialty food or as a culturally distinctive gift.
Product innovation has also played a role.
Traditional flavors such as lotus seed paste, red bean and mixed nuts remain important, while newer products featuring custard, fruit, reduced sugar and low-GI formulations are being developed for younger consumers and changing dietary preferences.
In London, Burlington Arcade held its seventh consecutive Mid-Autumn Festival celebration this year and partnered with a French café to create limited-edition mooncakes inspired by local design elements, providing another example of Chinese festival traditions being incorporated into local consumer culture.
A Changing Chinese Mooncake Market
The overseas expansion of mooncakes is taking place alongside changes in China's domestic market.
Consumers are increasingly paying attention to taste, health and practicality rather than simply the appearance or price of gift boxes. Data cited by CCTV showed that self-consumption accounted for 50.4% of mooncake consumption in 2026, exceeding the 42.5% share attributed to gifting. Low-sugar and sugar-free products have also seen strong growth.
These changes are influencing products designed for overseas markets as well.
Instead of relying solely on elaborate gift packaging, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on flavor innovation, healthier ingredients, convenient packaging and cultural storytelling.
Mooncakes Become a New Vehicle for Cultural Exchange
The rapid growth of mooncake sales in Europe is part of a broader trend in which traditional Chinese foods are reaching consumers around the world.
From a seasonal food primarily associated with Chinese communities to a product gaining visibility on European e-commerce platforms, the mooncake is gradually taking on a new international role.
For Chinese food manufacturers, the challenge will be to preserve the traditional character of mooncakes while adapting flavors, ingredients, packaging and marketing to different markets.
This year, the mooncake has traveled farther than ever. Along with its distinctive flavor, it is carrying ideas of reunion, sharing and Chinese cultural tradition to consumers around the world.
