Xiao Shenyang and His Wife Become a Surprise Hit With New Comedy

A surprise contender has emerged during China's 2026 National Day holiday box office battle.

The comedy filmWhat Do You Mean, Couple?, starring real-life husband and wife Xiao Shenyang and Shen Chunyang, has rapidly gained momentum since its release on October 1, turning into one of the holiday period's biggest dark horses.

Directed by Shen Chunyang and starring the couple, the film also features a large ensemble of familiar Chinese comedy performers, including Jia Bing, Yu Yang, Wei Xiang, Liang Long and Xu Juncong. The story follows a married couple who unexpectedly switch bodies, forcing them to experience each other's daily lives, workplaces and frustrations while becoming involved in a series of comic situations.

One of the film's biggest talking points is Shen Chunyang's transition from performer to director. The project marks her feature-film directorial debut, while her husband Xiao Shenyang takes the leading role. Their real-life relationship gives the central couple a natural familiarity that has become an important part of the film's appeal.

The biggest surprise, however, has been the box office performance.

The film earned about 48.5 million yuan on its opening day and attracted more than 1.36 million moviegoers. Its strong audience turnout helped it quickly establish itself as one of the leading titles in the National Day holiday market. By October 3, its cumulative box office had surpassed 100 million yuan, putting it in second place among the holiday releases.

The result is particularly notable because the film did not enter the holiday season with the same level of attention as some major franchises or productions led by high-profile stars. Instead, its momentum grew after audiences began seeing the film in theaters.

That word-of-mouth effect has become a defining part of the film's box-office story. Reports indicate that its theatrical presence and market expectations strengthened rapidly after release, turning a relatively low-profile title into a genuine holiday-season contender.

At the heart of the story is a familiar idea: what happens when a husband and wife are forced to live in each other's shoes?

The body-swap premise provides the comedy, but the film also explores communication and understanding within marriage. By experiencing each other's responsibilities firsthand, the two characters gradually begin to recognize the pressures and difficulties that had previously gone unnoticed.

That combination of everyday marital situations and broad comedy fits naturally with Xiao Shenyang and Shen Chunyang's performance styles. Their real-life relationship also adds an extra layer of authenticity to their on-screen interactions.

The film's supporting cast further strengthens its comedic appeal. With several well-known comedy performers joining the project, the movie creates a large ensemble capable of generating different styles of humor while maintaining its family-friendly tone.

The success ofWhat Do You Mean, Couple?also reflects the diversity of this year's National Day box office. By October 3, the 2026 National Day holiday box office had surpassed 400 million yuan, with films includingThe Detective: TracesandWhat Do You Mean, Couple?among the leading performers.

For Shen Chunyang, the film's performance represents more than a box-office surprise. It marks her first major step behind the camera and provides a direct response from audiences to her transition into directing.

For Xiao Shenyang and Shen Chunyang, the film's unexpected rise is also a reminder that in the movie business, pre-release expectations are only part of the story. Once a film reaches audiences, the final verdict ultimately comes from the people sitting inside the theater.

And this National Day holiday,What Do You Mean, Couple?appears to have found plenty of them.
