Kim Jong Un Watches Missile Launch Drill With Daughter as North Korea Tests Intermediate-Range Strat

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw an intermediate-range strategic missile launch drill early on October 3, with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, reportedly accompanying him at the site, according to North Korean state media reports released on October 4.

The Korean Central News Agency said the drill was conducted in the eastern part of North Korea and involved an intermediate-range strategic missile. Pyongyang claimed that the missile was launched toward the waters off the country's eastern coast and successfully struck a designated target.

North Korean authorities said the exercise was designed to improve the operational capabilities of missile units responsible for a hypersonic strategic weapons system. The drill was also described as an assessment of the reliability, effectiveness and mobility of the country's strategic deterrent.

Details about the missile's flight distance differed among the parties involved. North Korea claimed that the missile traveled approximately 1,000 kilometers before hitting its designated target. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, however, said it detected a ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan area that flew more than 700 kilometers toward the East Sea. Japanese authorities released a somewhat different preliminary estimate.

Images released by North Korean state media showed Kim Jong Un observing the launch and receiving briefings from military officials. Kim Ju Ae and Ri Sol Ju were also shown at the site.

Kim Ju Ae's presence is particularly notable. She has accompanied her father to a number of major military events in recent years, including activities involving strategic weapons. Her repeated appearances alongside Kim Jong Un have drawn international attention, although North Korea has not formally announced her future political role.

North Korean officials described the latest exercise as part of efforts to strengthen the country's strategic deterrent. Kim Jong Un said the country needed a strong deterrent capability to manage various threats and maintain a secure environment for national development.

Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's sister and a senior North Korean official, also commented on the missile launch. She claimed that the weapon could alter its trajectory at low altitude and referred to the use of artificial intelligence technology. Such technical claims, however, have not been independently verified by outside authorities.

The missile drill comes amid renewed tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North and South Korea have recently traded accusations over a landmine incident near the Demilitarized Zone, while Pyongyang has continued to emphasize the development of strategic weapons. South Korean authorities remain closely focused on North Korea's missile activity and military movements.

The latest launch therefore carries significance beyond the test itself. Kim Jong Un's decision to personally observe the exercise, together with the public appearance of his daughter, highlights the political importance Pyongyang places on its strategic weapons program.

Further information will be needed to independently assess the missile's exact type, technical capabilities and the claims surrounding its reported maneuverability and artificial-intelligence features.
