China Defeat Thailand in Five-Set Thriller to Reach Asian Games Women's Volleyball Final

China's women's volleyball team booked their place in the final of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after defeating Thailand 3-2 in a dramatic five-set semifinal on September 21.

The Chinese team came from behind twice before taking control in the deciding set, winning23-25, 25-21, 25-11, 26-28, 15-5to secure a place in the gold-medal match.

The match was particularly significant because China and Thailand had met only a few weeks earlier in the final of the 2026 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship. Thailand won that match 3-2 in Tianjin to claim the continental title and qualify directly for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

China entered Monday's semifinal determined to produce a different result.

Thailand Take the Opening Set

China made a positive start but struggled to maintain its advantage as the opening set progressed. Thailand's serving pressure and quick offensive combinations caused problems for the Chinese defense.

After the score became tight in the closing stages, Thailand edged ahead and took the first set 25-23.

China responded strongly in the second set. The introduction of experienced captain Gong Xiangyu helped stabilize the team's rhythm, while China's blocking and attacking at the net became increasingly effective.

China won the second set 25-21 to level the match at 1-1.

China Take Control

The third set proved to be China's strongest period of the match.

China established an early advantage and continued to increase the pressure on Thailand. The Chinese defense became more organized, while their attack repeatedly found gaps in the Thai block.

China eventually won the set 25-11, moving ahead 2-1 and putting themselves one set away from the final.

Thailand, however, refused to give up.

The fourth set developed into a tense battle, with both teams trading points throughout. China appeared to have opportunities to close out the match, but Thailand fought back and eventually won 28-26 after a dramatic finish.

The score was tied at 2-2, sending the semifinal into a decisive fifth set.

China Dominate the Deciding Set

The deciding set was a completely different story.

China started aggressively and quickly built a substantial lead. Their serving, blocking and attacking remained under control, while Thailand struggled to maintain the level of consistency it had shown earlier in the match.

China eventually closed out the fifth set 15-5, completing a 3-2 victory and securing their place in the Asian Games final.

The victory also gave China an opportunity to challenge for another Asian Games women's volleyball title. China entered the tournament as the defending champions after winning gold at the 2022 Asian Games.

A Crucial Victory for China's Young Team

The result was particularly noteworthy because China's squad has undergone significant changes, with a number of younger players taking prominent roles.

China had reached the semifinals after defeating Vietnam 3-0 in the quarterfinals. In that match, Zhuo Yushan scored 17 points, Wu Mengjie added 15, and Wang Aoqian contributed 13.

Against Thailand, the Chinese players once again had to deal with intense pressure, particularly after losing the opening and fourth sets.

Their ability to recover from difficult moments and maintain their composure in the deciding set proved crucial.

For Thailand, the defeat ended their hopes of reaching the gold-medal match. The reigning Asian champions will instead compete for the bronze medal.

China will now await the winner of the other semifinal between hosts Japan and South Korea for the Asian Games women's volleyball final.

The five-set victory over Thailand not only secured China's place in the championship match but also provided a response to their recent defeat in the Asian Championship final.

After more than two hours of intense competition, China emerged victorious, winning the decisive set 15-5 and taking another step toward the Asian Games gold medal.
