dexinwin China's Zhang Boheng successfully defended his men's individual all-around gymnastics title at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Monday, overcoming a strong challenge from two Japanese Olympic champions to claim gold.
The 26-year-old Chinese gymnast scored 85.065 points in the final at the Nagoya General Gymnasium, finishing ahead of Japan's Shinnosuke Oka and Daiki Hashimoto. Oka took silver with 84.698 points, while Hashimoto won bronze with 83.865.
The victory marked Zhang's second consecutive Asian Games gold medal in the men's individual all-around. It also extended China's winning streak in the event to three consecutive Asian Games.
Zhang Holds His Nerve in a Tight Final
The competition remained close throughout the six apparatus.
Zhang posted 13.800 points on floor exercise, 14.166 on pommel horse, 14.233 on still rings, 14.133 on vault, 14.700 on parallel bars and 14.033 on horizontal bar.
After five rotations, Zhang was still locked in a close battle with Oka. The Japanese gymnast entered the final rotation only 0.167 points behind the Chinese leader.
That left the outcome to the final routines. Oka completed his floor exercise without a major mistake, while Hashimoto lost points after an unstable landing and a line violation.
Zhang then took to the horizontal bar, his final apparatus. He delivered a clean routine and held on to the lead, securing the gold medal and completing his successful title defense.
Victory Over Two Olympic Champions
The result was particularly notable because Zhang faced both of Japan's leading all-around gymnasts.
Oka won three gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while Hashimoto was a two-time Olympic champion at Tokyo 2020. Zhang himself won the silver medal in the men's individual all-around at the Paris Olympics.
The three-way contest was widely regarded as one of the most closely watched gymnastics events of the Asian Games.
The victory also came after Zhang dealt with a minor injury before the competition. Following the final, he said the injury had affected him during the event, but he was pleased that he had been able to overcome the difficulty.
“I have kept reviewing my own shortcomings,” Zhang said, according to AFP. He added that his focus had been on adjusting technical elements and becoming more mature mentally.
Another Milestone for Chinese Gymnastics
Zhang's gold was China's first men's artistic gymnastics gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and continued the country's dominance in the men's individual all-around at the continental event.
For Zhang, the victory represents another important achievement after a period of intense competition at the highest level of international gymnastics.
With the Asian Games continuing in Japan, Zhang will now turn his attention to the remaining gymnastics events, while the Chinese team seeks to add more medals before the competition concludes.
His successful title defense in Nagoya has once again established Zhang Boheng at the center of one of the most competitive eras in men's artistic gymnastics.
