Japan Women’s Volleyball Team Shows Disappointment After Losing Asian Games Final

Japan’s women’s volleyball team finished with the silver medal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after losing 0-3 to China in the final on September 22.

China won the match 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23, securing its third consecutive Asian Games women’s volleyball title and its 10th gold medal in the event’s history. Japan, playing on home soil, finished second.

After the match, the Japanese players’ expressions during the medal ceremony attracted considerable attention. Several media outlets described the team as looking “serious” or “disappointed,” creating a noticeable contrast with the celebrations of the Chinese players, who were seen taking photos and interacting with other teams.

However, reports from Japanese media indicate that the players did not all maintain serious expressions throughout the ceremony. Japanese outlet THE ANSWER reported that 24-year-old Yuki Wada remained visibly disappointed while stretching after the match, although she also smiled while receiving her silver medal. Her emotional reaction attracted considerable attention from Japanese fans.

The result was particularly difficult for Japan because the team had been competing in front of its home crowd. Japan had been seeking its first Asian Games women’s volleyball title since the 1978 Bangkok Games, meaning the team was attempting to end a 48-year wait for gold.

Japan appeared to have a strong chance of extending the match in the third set. The hosts opened the set aggressively and built a lead of 7-1 before eventually extending it to as many as eight points.

China, however, gradually reduced the deficit through strong serving, blocking and defense. Japan’s advantage disappeared as the set entered its decisive stage, and China eventually completed the comeback to win 25-23 and close out the match 3-0. Japanese media subsequently highlighted the third-set collapse as one of the decisive moments of the final.

The match demonstrated the importance of maintaining concentration during critical stages. Japan controlled much of the early part of the third set, but China continued applying pressure instead of allowing the large deficit to determine the outcome.

The atmosphere during the medal ceremony reflected the contrasting results. Chinese players celebrated their championship with photographs and interactions, while Japanese players appeared more reserved and disappointed after falling short in front of their home supporters.

For Japan, the silver medal marks a second consecutive runner-up finish at the Asian Games. The team also lost the previous final to China, making the result another difficult setback against the same opponent.

For China, meanwhile, the victory completed a third consecutive Asian Games championship and added another gold medal to the team’s historic record.
