LeBron James made his preseason debut for the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, providing an efficient all-around performance before sitting out the second half as Philadelphia eventually fell 114-108 to the Brooklyn Nets.
James played 18 minutes in his first appearance in a 76ers uniform, recording 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and one steal. He shot 1-for-1 from the field and made all eight of his free-throw attempts. His plus-minus was a team-best +10 among Philadelphia's starters.
The game marked James' first appearance for Philadelphia after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers and joining the 76ers. The preseason matchup also provided the first opportunity for Philadelphia's new-look starting lineup to play together in an NBA game.
James started alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe, giving the 76ers one of the most closely watched starting groups of the preseason.
Rather than immediately looking for his own shot, James initially focused on creating opportunities for his teammates. He quickly established himself as the primary playmaker, using his court vision to initiate transition attacks and organize Philadelphia's half-court offense.
His impact was especially noticeable in the opening quarter. James recorded five assists in the first period without committing a turnover, helping Philadelphia generate an efficient offensive rhythm. Several of his passes created scoring opportunities for younger teammates, including Edgecombe and Maxey.
The Sixers' offense appeared determined to play at a faster pace, with James frequently looking for long passes and early opportunities in transition. With Maxey, Brown and Edgecombe all capable of attacking quickly, James' passing ability could become an important component of Philadelphia's offensive identity.
James became more aggressive as a scorer in the second quarter. He recorded his first field goal as a 76er on a layup, while continuing to attack the basket and draw fouls.
His final line was built largely at the free-throw line. James went a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe and finished with 10 points despite attempting only one official field goal. He also added four rebounds, five assists and one steal.
James did not return after halftime. Philadelphia led 58-56 at the break, but the Nets took control in the second half and eventually secured a 114-108 preseason victory. The result, however, was secondary to the Sixers' goal of testing their new lineup and establishing chemistry between their core players.
The debut offered an early indication of how Philadelphia may use James during the upcoming season. Instead of relying exclusively on him as a scorer, the Sixers appeared to emphasize his ability to initiate the offense and connect multiple scoring options.
That role could become particularly important on a roster featuring several high-level offensive players. Embiid remains one of the league's dominant interior scorers, Maxey provides speed and perimeter scoring, while Brown adds another powerful attacking option. James' ability to distribute the ball could help balance the responsibilities among those players.

There were also areas for Philadelphia to improve. The team struggled with turnovers after halftime, while Embiid committed eight turnovers in the game. The Nets capitalized on Philadelphia's mistakes and used a strong third quarter to take control of the contest.
For James, however, the debut was an efficient introduction to his new team. At 41 years old, he did not need to dominate the scoring column to influence the game. His five assists in the first quarter and +10 plus-minus demonstrated how he can impact a game through playmaking, decision-making and overall control.
The preseason result ultimately mattered less than the opportunity to see Philadelphia's new core together on the court. The combination of James, Embiid, Brown, Maxey and Edgecombe remains a work in progress, but Thursday's game provided an early glimpse of its potential.
James' first outing in Philadelphia ended with 10 points and five assists in limited minutes. As the preseason continues, the focus will shift toward building chemistry, defining roles and determining how the veteran superstar can maximize the considerable offensive talent around him.
