A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck Baoxing County in Ya'an City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, at 12:21 p.m. on October 9, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 23 kilometers, with the epicenter located at approximately 30.29 degrees north latitude and 102.85 degrees east longitude, according to the center's official determination.
The epicenter was located about 11 kilometers from Baoxing County, 18 kilometers from Lushan County and approximately 36 kilometers from Ya'an's urban area. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, was about 124 kilometers from the epicenter.
The earthquake attracted immediate attention among residents and on social media. Initial automatic monitoring briefly estimated the event at around magnitude 3.6 before the official determination was revised to magnitude 3.8.
As of the latest publicly available information, there have been no reports of significant casualties or property damage caused by the earthquake. Local social conditions were reported to be normal.
Baoxing County is located in a mountainous area of western Sichuan, where earthquakes are relatively common. The local terrain means that residents and authorities must pay attention not only to the direct effects of an earthquake but also to possible secondary hazards such as falling rocks, landslides and road damage.
The China Earthquake Networks Center noted that there have been numerous earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above within 200 kilometers of the epicenter during the past five years. Among the stronger historical events in the broader region was the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Luding County in Sichuan in September 2022.
Experts generally emphasize that earthquake magnitude alone does not determine the level of damage. Factors such as focal depth, distance from the epicenter, local geological conditions and building structures can all affect how strongly an earthquake is felt and how much damage it may cause.
Following an earthquake, residents are advised to remain calm and check their surroundings for potential hazards. People should avoid damaged buildings and areas where falling objects or unstable slopes could pose a danger. In mountainous regions, additional caution is particularly important because earthquakes can destabilize slopes and trigger rockfalls or landslides.

Authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity in the region. Any further information regarding aftershocks, casualties or property damage will depend on subsequent assessments by local authorities and seismic monitoring agencies.
For now, the available information indicates that the magnitude 3.8 earthquake was a relatively small seismic event and has not resulted in reports of major casualties or losses. Residents are encouraged to follow official information and avoid spreading unverified reports online.
