dexinwin China secured its first gold medal of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, with the women's modern pentathlon team taking the top spot in a successful title defense.
The gold came on September 20, the first full day of competition at the Games, which are being held across Aichi Prefecture and other Japanese venues from September 19 to October 4.
China Defends Women's Modern Pentathlon Team Title
The Chinese women's modern pentathlon team, consisting of Zhang Mingyu, Wu Xiyao, Fu Jing and Meng Xin, won the team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Their victory delivered China's first gold medal of the Games and continued the country's dominance in the event at the Asian Games. China successfully defended its women's modern pentathlon team title after also winning the event at the previous edition in Hangzhou.
Modern pentathlon combines several different disciplines and requires athletes to demonstrate versatility, endurance and tactical ability. The current format features fencing, swimming, obstacle course racing and the laser run, which combines running and shooting.
The demanding nature of the event means that team success depends on consistent performances across multiple disciplines rather than excellence in just one area.
A Strong Start for China's Asian Games Campaign
The first gold gives the Chinese delegation an early boost as competition intensifies across the 2026 Asian Games.
China has topped the Asian Games medal table at every edition since 1982 and won 201 gold medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. The Aichi-Nagoya Games feature 43 sports and 469 medal events, with athletes from 45 countries and regions competing.
China's first gold also came amid a busy opening day of competition. Other Chinese athletes were competing in shooting, triathlon and several other sports as the delegation began its campaign across venues in Japan.
The result highlights the depth of China's strength in sports that require a combination of physical fitness, technical skills and tactical discipline.
A Different Story in the Women's Individual Event
The team title was China's first gold of the Aichi-Nagoya Games, but the women's individual modern pentathlon final produced a different result.
South Korea's Seong Seung-min won the individual gold with 1,492 points, while China's Zhang Mingyu took silver and Wu Xiyao won bronze. Seong's victory made her the first South Korean woman to win the individual modern pentathlon title at the Asian Games and ended China's run of four consecutive individual gold medals in the event.
Seong led the competition from the early stages, finishing first in fencing before maintaining her advantage through the obstacle course, swimming and laser run.
For China, however, the team victory provided an important opening success and demonstrated that the country's modern pentathlon program remains highly competitive despite the change in the individual podium.
The Road Ahead
The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games bring together around 17,000 athletes and officials, with competition spread across multiple Japanese cities. Organizers have prepared 469 medal events in 43 sports, making this one of the largest editions in Asian Games history.
For China, the women's modern pentathlon team gold marks the beginning of what is expected to be a closely watched medal campaign.
With shooting, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, table tennis, badminton and other major sports still ahead, the Chinese delegation will continue its pursuit of medals throughout the Games.
