China enjoyed a spectacular start to its medal campaign at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 20, winning two gold medals within roughly 10 minutes as its athletes made an immediate impact across different events.
The rapid double triumph came after China had already claimed its first medal of the Games earlier in the morning, when Zhang Xirui won silver in the men's individual triathlon. Japan's Takumi Hojo took the event's gold, which was also the first gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
China Claims Its First Gold
China's first gold medal came in the women's team modern pentathlon.
The Chinese team, featuring Zhang Mingyu, Wu Xiyao, Fu Jing and Meng Xin, finished at the top of the standings to give the delegation its first gold of the Games.
The result was particularly significant because China successfully defended its title in the women's team event, maintaining its strong record in modern pentathlon at the Asian Games.
The victory also came shortly after Zhang Xirui's silver medal in the men's triathlon, giving Chinese athletes an early sequence of podium finishes on the first major competition day.
Another Gold Follows Minutes Later
The momentum continued almost immediately when China's Lin Xinyu won the women's individual triathlon.
Lin, a 2002-born Chinese athlete and an experienced international competitor, entered the Asian Games as one of the leading names in the women's triathlon field. World Triathlon records her as having 10 career victories and 22 podium finishes before the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
Her victory added a second gold medal to China's tally within approximately 10 minutes of the modern pentathlon team triumph.
The back-to-back victories created one of the most striking moments of China's opening day at the Games, with the delegation quickly moving from its first gold to a second.
A Strong Opening for the Chinese Delegation
The two gold medals came on a busy opening day of competition at the 20th Asian Games.
The Aichi-Nagoya Games feature 43 sports and 469 medal events, with athletes from 45 countries and regions competing through October 4. Around 17,000 athletes and officials are taking part across venues in Japan.
China sent 815 athletes to the Games after winning 201 gold medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. The delegation is competing across a wide range of sports, including swimming, shooting, table tennis, gymnastics, athletics and combat sports.
For Chinese athletes, the opening day's results provided an encouraging start across endurance and multi-discipline events.
From Silver to Gold
The morning also highlighted how closely contested the competition can be.
In the men's individual triathlon, Zhang Xirui finished only nine seconds behind Japan's Takumi Hojo to take silver, while Kazakhstan's Arlan Zhanabay won bronze. Zhang's result was China's first medal of the Games.
China then converted its momentum into gold medals in women's modern pentathlon and women's triathlon.
The rapid succession of victories gave the Chinese delegation an early boost and demonstrated the depth of its medal contenders at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
With more than two weeks of competition still ahead, China's campaign will now continue across dozens of sports as athletes pursue further medals in Nagoya, Aichi and other Japanese venues.
