On September 26, the “Echoes of an Era” concert was held in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. Lee was scheduled to perform later in the evening, but his journey to the venue was severely disrupted. While the audience waited, grassroots singer Hou Lang, who had originally purchased a ticket to attend the show, was unexpectedly invited by the production team to take the stage.
With virtually no preparation, Hou performed nearly 20 songs and helped keep the audience entertained until Lee finally arrived.
From Audience Member to Emergency Performer
The concert was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and featured several well-known singers, including Hacken Lee, Priscilla Chan, Chyi Chin, Mavis Fan, Zheng Zhihua and Lee Li-Feng.
Lee’s journey to Baotou was disrupted by severe weather. His flight was forced to divert to Taiyuan, after which he continued his journey by ground transportation. A connecting electric vehicle reportedly ran out of power during the trip, forcing him to switch to a taxi. He eventually reached the venue at around 12:30 a.m., roughly two hours later than his scheduled appearance.
With the delay creating a long gap in the program, the production team needed someone to step in.
That person turned out to be Hou Lang, who had entered the venue simply as a ticket-holding audience member.
Nearly 20 Songs With Almost No Preparation
Hou later said that he had no time to prepare before taking the stage.
It was also his first experience performing before an audience of around 30,000 people. His previous largest performance had involved only several thousand spectators.
“I had no preparation,” Hou explained in an interview. He said he simply sang whatever songs came to mind and focused on doing his best under the circumstances.
He continued performing song after song, eventually singing nearly 20 songs.
The unusual situation transformed Hou from an ordinary concertgoer into the emergency performer responsible for keeping thousands of people engaged while the headlining act was still on the way.
Hacken Lee Eventually Arrives
While Hou was performing on stage, Lee was still making his way to Baotou.
According to reports, Lee had begun his journey early that morning. After his flight was diverted because of weather, he continued by road and eventually switched to a taxi after further transportation problems.
Lee finally arrived at around 12:30 a.m.
Once on stage, he repeatedly bowed and apologized to the audience before explaining the difficulties he had encountered during his journey.
He subsequently performed for the audience and added songs beyond the originally planned set as a gesture to those who had waited for him.
A Special Moment Between an Idol and His Fan
After Lee completed his performance, he also made a point of thanking Hou Lang.
The two singers embraced on stage, creating one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
Hou later said that he had long been a fan of Lee and considered performing alongside his idol a great honor. He said Lee personally thanked him, and the two embraced for more than ten seconds.
For Hou, what began as an ordinary night at a concert unexpectedly became an opportunity to share the stage with one of the singers he admired.
