TEHRAN, Oct. 2— The iconic Azadi Tower in Tehran was illuminated in the colors of China's national flag on the evening of Oct. 1 to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The landmark display brought a distinctly Chinese touch to Tehran's night skyline and highlighted the long-standing exchanges between China and Iran.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Iran, Chinese Ambassador to Iran Cong Peiwu attended the lighting ceremony, along with Gholamzadeh, director of the Tehran municipal government's international affairs liaison center, and Doudag, head of Tehran's District 9.

Tehran's Azadi Tower Turns Red for China's National Day

Oct. 1 marks China's National Day. This year, Tehran's famous Azadi Tower was illuminated with the Chinese national flag to mark the occasion.

The landmark, one of Tehran's most recognizable architectural symbols, stood out against the city's night skyline as its exterior was illuminated in China's signature red.

For Chinese citizens living and working in Iran, the display offered a particularly meaningful sight: the national flag appearing on a major landmark thousands of kilometers from China on the country's national holiday.

Iran Sends Congratulations to China

Iranian representatives attending the event extended congratulations on the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and spoke positively about China's development achievements.

Ambassador Cong Peiwu highlighted China's development over the past 77 years and said China is advancing national development and modernization while creating additional opportunities for cooperation and development around the world.

The remarks came against the backdrop of continued exchanges between Beijing and Tehran across a range of areas.

A Significant Year for China-Iran Relations

The lighting ceremony also comes during a notable year for bilateral relations:2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Iran.

The two countries have maintained long-standing ties and continued exchanges in areas including trade, energy, infrastructure and local-level cooperation.

Iranian officials said they hoped to use the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between provinces and cities in the two countries.

A Landmark Carries a Message of Friendship

The illumination of an overseas landmark for China's National Day is more than a lighting display.

For Chinese diplomatic missions and overseas Chinese communities, such events provide an opportunity to mark an important national occasion while also promoting cultural exchange with local communities.

In Tehran, the sight of the Chinese national flag projected onto the Azadi Tower provided a highly visible symbol of the country's National Day celebrations.

It also offered local residents and visitors a chance to witness a Chinese cultural and national celebration in one of Iran's most recognizable public spaces.

A New Moment in China-Iran Exchanges

With 2026 marking the 55th anniversary of China-Iran diplomatic relations, the Azadi Tower illumination added a symbolic dimension to this year's National Day celebrations.

Bilateral relations are reflected not only through high-level diplomatic contacts, but also through cooperation between cities, institutions, businesses and communities.

As China and Iran continue their exchanges in various fields, the image of Tehran's Azadi Tower illuminated with the Chinese national flag will stand as a memorable scene from China's 77th National Day celebrations.

For one evening, China's national colors lit up one of Tehran's most recognizable landmarks, sending a festive message of goodwill from Iran to the Chinese people.
