A video showing a man apparently falling asleep in the driver’s seat while using an assisted-driving function on a highway has sparked widespread discussion over road safety and the limits of current intelligent driving technology.

According to media reports, the incident occurred on October 1. Yang, the driver who recorded the footage, said he was traveling on a highway from Quzhou in Zhejiang Province toward Shangrao in Jiangxi Province at around 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. when he noticed another vehicle traveling nearby.

Yang said he followed the vehicle for roughly three minutes and noticed that the driver appeared to be asleep in the driver’s seat. He said he repeatedly sounded his horn in an attempt to alert the driver, but the driver did not appear to respond. The driver was apparently awakened later when the vehicle encountered congestion and braked.

Yang later explained that he shared the footage mainly as a warning to other motorists, saying that driving in such a manner was dangerous. The video quickly attracted public attention and triggered renewed debate about the safety of assisted-driving systems and the responsibilities of drivers.

Assisted Driving Is Not the Same as Autonomous Driving

One of the central issues raised by the incident is the distinction between intelligent assisted driving and fully autonomous driving.

According to previous statements from Chinese authorities and experts, many intelligent-driving systems currently available in commercially sold vehicles are classified as driver-assistance technologies rather than fully autonomous driving systems. Drivers remain responsible for maintaining control and being ready to intervene when necessary.

Under China's vehicle driving automation classification system, Levels 0 through 2 are primarily considered driver-assistance functions. Even when these systems are active, drivers are expected to remain attentive to traffic conditions and be prepared to take over if the system encounters a situation it cannot handle.

This requirement becomes particularly important on highways, where vehicles travel at high speeds and unexpected situations can develop quickly. Sudden braking, illegal lane changes by other vehicles, obstacles on the road or changes in traffic conditions may require immediate human intervention.

Greater Capability Does Not Mean Drivers Can Stop Paying Attention

As intelligent-driving technology develops, modern vehicles are increasingly capable of functions such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, assisted lane changes and automated parking. These technologies can reduce driver workload in certain situations.

However, increased assistance does not mean that drivers can completely disengage from the driving task.

Experts and industry professionals have repeatedly emphasized that driver-assistance systems are intended to support motorists, not replace their responsibility. Drivers should not use such systems as a reason to sleep, use their phones or otherwise stop monitoring the road while the vehicle is moving.

In this case, the filmer’s account that repeated horn warnings failed to wake the driver has also raised concerns about what could happen if a driver becomes completely disengaged from the driving environment.

Defining the Safety Boundaries of Intelligent Driving

The rapid development of intelligent-driving technology is changing the traditional driving experience, but technological progress must be accompanied by a clear understanding of its safety boundaries.

Drivers should understand exactly what their vehicle's assistance system can and cannot do and use it only within the conditions specified by the manufacturer. When fatigue becomes significant during a long-distance journey, drivers should stop at a service area and rest rather than relying on an assistance system while asleep.

The specific vehicle brand and identity of the driver involved in the video have not been publicly confirmed. Any further assessment of possible traffic violations should also depend on the findings of the relevant authorities.

The incident serves as another reminder thatintelligent driving can assist a driver, but it should not be treated as a reason for a driver to abandon responsibility for road safety.

On highways, staying awake, monitoring traffic conditions and remaining ready to take control remain fundamental requirements for safe driving.
