Mbappé Faces Backlash in China as Sponsors Cut Ties After Controversial Remarks
French football star Kylian Mbappé has come under intense criticism in China following remarks in an interview that were perceived by many as disrespectful toward Chinese history. The controversy has spread beyond football, affecting his commercial partnerships and prompting a public apology from the Real Madrid forward.
The dispute began after Mbappé discussed an internet meme featuring his own image during a recent interview. While describing the picture, he referred to a figure as a Chinese “dictator.” The remarks were widely interpreted as referring to Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People’s Republic of China. After video clips circulated online, many Chinese social media users criticized the comments and called for a boycott of products associated with the footballer.
The backlash soon had commercial consequences. Chinese companies including Dongpeng Beverage, Mengniu Dairy and Milkground announced that they were ending their partnerships with Mbappé. China Media Group also suspended broadcasts of Spanish league matches involving him and removed related advertisements. The Chinese Football Association reportedly raised the issue with Real Madrid, calling for a formal response from the player and the club.
On October 27, Mbappé issued an apology on his social media accounts. He acknowledged that his comments during the interview had been ill-judged and said he now understood that they had hurt people in China and Chinese communities around the world. He stressed that causing offense had not been his intention, expressed respect for the Chinese people and their history, and apologized to those affected by his remarks.
The apology has not immediately ended the controversy. Some commentators argue that international sports stars should exercise greater care when discussing another country's history and cultural sensitivities, particularly when their public image is closely tied to commercial endorsements. Others stress the importance of considering the full context of an interview before drawing conclusions from widely circulated clips.
The incident highlights the growing connection between celebrity reputation, international business and cultural understanding. Global athletes are not only sporting figures but also influential representatives of the brands they promote. Their words can therefore have consequences far beyond the playing field.
For Mbappé, the immediate challenge is no longer simply responding to criticism. Rebuilding trust with Chinese fans and consumers may require consistent conduct over time, as well as a clearer understanding of the expectations that accompany his global profile.
