Scientists have identified a previously unknown species of wild cat in Bolivia, marking the first time in more than a century that an entirely new living feline species has been formally recognized.

NamedLeopardus tilcayo, or the Tilcayo tiger cat, the small spotted feline lives in the Yungas forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Bolivia. The species is only about 46 centimeters (18 inches) long and weighs approximately 1.4 kilograms (3 pounds), making it smaller than an average domestic cat.

The discovery was detailed in a study published September 17 in the journalCurrent Biology. Researchers say the animal represents the first completely new living cat species described in more than 100 years. The previous comparable discovery was the pampas cat in 1923.

The story began in 2016, when Bolivian biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz was contacted by a wildlife sanctuary about an unusual “cat” that had been brought there after being found as a kitten near a forest road.

At first, researchers believed the animal was a tiger cat, a group of small spotted wild cats found across parts of Central and South America. But several years later, differences in its appearance raised questions about its identity.

The mystery was eventually investigated using genetic analysis. Researchers examined DNA from38 tiger catscollected from several South American countries, including eight museum specimens. Their results showed that the animals previously grouped together as tiger cats actually represented five distinct evolutionary lineages.

The Bolivian population was genetically distinct from the other groups and was found to have separated from its relatives approximately1.4 million years ago.

The new species takes its name from the word “tilcayo,” which local people have traditionally used for the animal. Scientists say only a small number of individuals have so far been directly observed or documented, leaving many basic questions about the species unanswered.

Researchers currently know little about its population size, reproduction or behavior. Preliminary evidence suggests the cats may feed on small rodents, but much more field research is needed.

The discovery is significant not only because it adds a new branch to the cat family tree, but also because it demonstrates how modern genetic technology can reveal species that look extremely similar to animals already known to science.

Small wild cats are particularly difficult to study. Many are nocturnal, elusive and visually similar, meaning that photographs alone may not be enough to distinguish one species from another. Genetic analysis can reveal evolutionary differences that are invisible to the human eye.

The researchers say the finding could also have important conservation consequences. If what was previously considered one widespread species is actually several separate species, each population may face a different level of risk and require its own conservation assessment.

The Yungas forests are under pressure from deforestation, agriculture, fires and mining. Scientists have submitted information about the newly identified species to the International Union for Conservation of Nature for further assessment.
