BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2026— A smart pill box priced at3,900 yuan ($550)at a senior-care products store in Beijing has drawn attention to the rapidly growing market for technology-enabled elderly care and the affordability challenges facing older consumers.

The product, recently highlighted in a report by Beijing Daily, can store medicines, connect with blood-pressure and blood-glucose monitoring devices, synchronize health data and provide medication reminders, according to a store employee.

By comparison, a conventional pill box without smart functions can cost only several dozen yuan.

What Does a 3,900-Yuan Pill Box Offer?

The smart pill box is designed to combine basic medication storage with health-management functions.

According to the store's description, it can connect with blood-pressure and blood-glucose monitoring equipment and synchronize users' health data. It can also remind users when it is time to take their medication.

Such functions are intended to help older people manage medication schedules while potentially allowing family members or caregivers to monitor relevant health information.

However, the large difference in price between smart and conventional pill boxes has raised a broader question: how much are consumers willing or able to pay for additional digital functions in everyday elderly-care products?

Smart Elderly-Care Products Can Be Expensive

The pill box was not the only expensive product found during the Beijing Daily's visit.

A so-called AI traditional Chinese medicine constitution identification system displayed at the same store was priced at31,230 yuan. The device was not connected to the internet during the reporter's visit, making it impossible to fully test the functions promoted by the store.

Other smart elderly-care products, including AI glasses, electric care beds and protective equipment designed to respond to falls, were also found at elderly-care stores and experience centers.

The report noted that products incorporating more hardware and software functions often carry significantly higher prices.

Hardware and Software Add to Costs

Industry professionals told Beijing Daily that the cost of smart elderly-care products comes from both hardware and software.

Hardware may include sensors, chips, motors, communication components and other specialized equipment. More sophisticated products also require software development, data processing and ongoing cloud services.

For AI-powered products, development and maintenance can create additional expenses after the product reaches consumers.

Industry experts said that increasing production scale could help lower unit costs. However, the smart elderly-care market remains fragmented, with companies still testing different products and business models.

Focusing on Real Needs

Experts interviewed by Beijing Daily suggested that manufacturers could reduce costs by focusing on specific needs rather than adding large numbers of functions.

For example, a product designed primarily to provide medication reminders or fall detection could use simpler hardware than a device attempting to provide a broad range of health-management services.

This approach could make smart elderly-care technology more accessible while allowing manufacturers to concentrate resources on functions that older users actually need.

The issue is particularly relevant as China's elderly population grows and demand for home-based care and health-management services increases.

Rental Models Offer Another Option

Some companies and institutions are also exploring rental services rather than outright sales.

The Beijing report found a smart elderly-care package originally priced at 1,500 yuan that was advertised at one point with short-term rental options. The package included functions such as fall detection and emergency SOS assistance.

However, the store told the reporter that the rental service had subsequently been discontinued because the devices were linked to users' personal data and cloud accounts, creating difficulties when equipment was returned and resold.

Affordability Remains a Key Challenge

The 3,900-yuan smart pill box illustrates a larger challenge for China's smart elderly-care industry.

Technology can provide medication reminders, health-data synchronization, emergency alerts and other services, but higher prices can become a barrier for the very people who may benefit from those functions.

For the industry, the next stage may therefore involve finding a balance between technological sophistication and affordability.

As smart elderly-care products become more common, consumers will increasingly look not only at how many functions a device offers, but also at whether those functions provide enough practical value to justify the price.
