On September 20, they visited the Yellow Crane Tower, one of Wuhan's best-known cultural landmarks, overlooking the Yangtze River.

The event brought together more than 80 mayors and city representatives from more than 20 countries, according to Wuhan municipal authorities.

Among the participating cities were Manchester in the United Kingdom, Kemi in Finland, Cape Town in South Africa, Yangon in Myanmar, Rzeszów in Poland and Turkistan in Kazakhstan.
Manchester MayorShaukat Alihighlighted the long relationship between Manchester and Wuhan. The two cities established friendship-city ties in 1986 and have since expanded cooperation in areas including clean energy and advanced manufacturing.
From Conference Rooms to Cultural Landmarks
The Wuhan gathering was not limited to formal meetings.
International guests also visited research institutions, technology facilities and companies, and experienced some of the city's newer transportation and industrial developments.
On September 19, for example, foreign delegates experienced Wuhan's “Optics Valley Photon” suspended rail system and visited a smart-home appliance factory. These activities were designed to give visitors a closer look at Wuhan's approach to technological development and urban modernization.
The visit to Yellow Crane Tower offered a contrasting experience.
Instead of discussing urban policy or industrial cooperation, the guests were able to experience one of the city's most recognizable cultural symbols.
The newspaper photographs added another personal element to the visit.
Wuhan and Its International City Network
Wuhan has established international friendship or exchange-city relationships with127 cities in 64 countries, according to the city's government.
Officials say these relationships have become an important channel for cooperation in areas including technology, culture, environmental protection and economic development.
The 2026 World Mayors Dialogue was therefore intended not only as a diplomatic gathering but also as a platform for practical cooperation between cities.
Ten cooperation projects were signed during the event, while participants also released a new initiative for international friendship-city cooperation.

International city diplomacy is often associated with formal speeches, agreements and official ceremonies.
The newspaper episode in Wuhan was much simpler.
