Qualcomm has unveiled two new flagship smartphone platforms built on a 2-nanometer process, marking a major step in its next-generation mobile chip strategy and placing a stronger emphasis on on-device artificial intelligence.

At the 2026 Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on September 22, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the higher-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both platforms are manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process technology and feature Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture.

The launch marks a new approach to Qualcomm’s flagship lineup, with the company offering two platforms aimed at different levels of premium smartphones. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is designed to bring the company’s latest technologies to a broader range of flagship devices, while the Extreme version targets smartphones positioned at the highest end of the market.

Performance is one of the major highlights. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 pushes the Oryon CPU beyond the 5GHz threshold, making it the first mobile CPU in the company’s lineup to cross that mark. Compared with the previous generation, Qualcomm reports a 13% improvement in CPU performance, a 44% increase in GPU performance and a 35% improvement in NPU performance. CPU and GPU power efficiency are reported to improve by 37% and 40%, respectively.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 also uses a 2nm process and combines a new Oryon CPU with an Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU. Qualcomm says the platform delivers a 10% CPU performance increase and a 35% GPU performance increase compared with the previous generation, while CPU and GPU efficiency improve by 37% and 40%, respectively.

Artificial intelligence is another major focus of the new platforms. Qualcomm designed both chips around what it describes as the era of “agentic AI,” with an emphasis on running increasingly sophisticated AI workloads directly on smartphones.

The company says the new platforms are designed to enable more personalized and adaptive AI experiences, allowing on-device AI agents to better understand user context and perform multi-step tasks without relying entirely on cloud computing.

Gaming and imaging have also received significant upgrades. The higher-end Extreme platform introduces technologies such as Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses AI-assisted graphics processing to enhance mobile gaming experiences. Qualcomm has also highlighted improvements in camera processing, scene understanding and professional video capabilities.

Connectivity has been upgraded as well. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 integrates Qualcomm’s X105 5G Modem-RF System, with peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps, alongside support for advanced Wi-Fi connectivity.

Qualcomm said the new platforms will be adopted by a range of major smartphone brands, including Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO, HONOR, Motorola, iQOO, REDMI, REDMAGIC and OnePlus. Devices using the new chips will be introduced progressively, with individual manufacturers expected to announce specific models and launch schedules.

The arrival of Qualcomm’s two 2nm flagship platforms comes as the smartphone industry increasingly shifts its focus from traditional performance benchmarks toward AI capabilities, energy efficiency and overall device experience.

With 2nm manufacturing entering a new stage of mobile deployment, the next generation of flagship smartphones is expected to compete not only on raw computing performance, but also on on-device AI, gaming, imaging, connectivity and power efficiency.
