China Hold Iran to Goalless Draw in Asian Games Men’s Football

China’s men’s football team played out a0-0 draw with Iranin the second round of Group B at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 20, earning a valuable point in a tightly contested match.

The result left China withfour points from two matches, after opening the tournament with a 2-1 comeback victory over North Korea. Iran had beaten the United Arab Emirates 3-1 in its opening game and remained ahead of China on goal difference.

Iran Control Possession in the First Half

The Chinese side adopted a relatively cautious approach, looking to defend compactly and attack on the counter. Iran enjoyed more possession and put China under pressure for long periods during the opening half.

China struggled to create clear chances early in the match. Iran controlled much of the ball, while China's defensive organization prevented its opponents from creating a decisive opportunity.

China's best chance of the first half came shortly before the break.

In the 43rd minute, Xu Bin played a through ball toward Wang Yudong, whose effort was blocked. Zhang Yuning followed up with a second attempt but sent the ball over the bar.

China Improve After the Break

China became more aggressive after halftime and began creating better attacking opportunities.

In the 49th minute, Wang Yudong received the ball following a set-piece move and attempted a long-range shot, forcing the Iranian goalkeeper to make a save.

A few minutes later, China came even closer to breaking the deadlock.

Wang Yudong delivered a short corner routine, and veteran midfielderWu Xistruck the ball first time from outside the area. His shot beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar.

The chance briefly shifted the momentum toward China, although neither side was able to find a winning goal.

China made several substitutions late in the match, including the introduction of Baihelamu and Mutalifu, as the team looked for a breakthrough.

Four Points From Two Games

Players See Positive Signs

Despite failing to score, several Chinese players said the performance showed improvement compared with the opening match.

Midfielder Mao Weijie said the team looked less nervous and had greater confidence than in the first game. He described the point as a positive result and said the players would continue to improve before the final group match.

Wang Yudong also said the team played with greater composure and had addressed some of the problems with ball circulation seen against North Korea. He added that China was able to execute the coach's tactical instructions more effectively after the adjustments.

China Still in Control of Its Qualification Push

The 0-0 draw leaves China in a strong position to fight for a place in the knockout stage, although its final group match will still be important.

China's next opponent is theUnited Arab Emirates, while Iran will also face the UAE and North Korea before the group stage concludes.

The goalless draw did not provide the attacking spectacle that Chinese supporters may have hoped for, but it demonstrated China's ability to remain organized against a strong opponent.
