The Nobel Foundation has announced an increase in the prize money for the 2026 Nobel Prizes, with the award for each category rising by1 million Swedish kronor to 12 million kronor, an increase of roughly 9%.
The new amount is equivalent to approximately$1.2 million, depending on exchange rates. The increase comes as the Nobel Prize marks the 125th anniversary of its first awards.
Prize Money Increased by 1 Million Kronor
Under the new arrangement, each 2026 Nobel Prize category will carry prize money of 12 million Swedish kronor.
Hanna Stjärne, executive director of the Nobel Foundation, said the increase was intended to uphold the long-term significance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that its financial component retains its value over time.
The new amount applies to the Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace, as well as the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
If a prize is shared by multiple laureates, the prize money is divided according to the Nobel Prize's established rules.
Increase Comes During the Prize's 125th Anniversary
The timing of the increase is particularly notable.
The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, making 2026 the 125th anniversary of the awards.
The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements are scheduled to take place from October 5 through October 12. The prize in physiology or medicine will be announced first, while the economics prize will be announced last.
The increase in prize money is therefore one of the notable developments surrounding this year's anniversary.
The change is not simply a one-time bonus. The Nobel Foundation said the adjustment is part of its effort to maintain the long-term financial value of the award.
Nobel Prize Money Has Changed Repeatedly
The 12 million kronor figure is not a permanent amount.
When the first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, each prize was worth 150,782 Swedish kronor.
The amount has been adjusted several times over the history of the awards.
In 2012, the Nobel Foundation reduced the prize from 10 million kronor to 8 million kronor as part of a broader effort to strengthen the Foundation's finances.
The amount was subsequently increased several times. In 2025, each Nobel Prize was worth 11 million kronor. The figure has now reached 12 million kronor in 2026.
The Money Is Only Part of the Prize
Although 12 million Swedish kronor represents a substantial financial award, the money has never been the central purpose of the Nobel Prize.
Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has become one of the world's most prominent international awards for achievements in science, literature and peace.
The Nobel Foundation is responsible for managing Alfred Nobel's assets and safeguarding the long-term principles established in his will. It also oversees the Nobel Prize ceremonies and related activities.
For scientists, writers and peace advocates, receiving a Nobel Prize represents international recognition of their work. The financial award is an important component, but the recognition itself carries a much broader significance.
Why Did the Foundation Raise the Amount?
The Nobel Foundation's explanation centers on maintaining the long-term financial value of the prize.
Inflation, investment returns and the performance of the Foundation's assets all affect its ability to maintain the real value of the award over time.
The Foundation's 2025 annual report shows that the total amount paid for the six Nobel Prizes that year was 55 million Swedish kronor. The Foundation also had expenses related to prize committees, Nobel Week activities and administration.
The increase therefore reflects not only a larger payment to individual laureates, but also the Foundation's assessment of its long-term financial position.
2026 Laureates Will Soon Be Announced
With the prize money now increased, attention will soon turn from the size of the awards to the identities of this year's laureates.
The 2026 Nobel Prizes will be announced between October 5 and October 12.

The announcements covering medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics will attract global attention from the scientific, academic and cultural communities.
For the eventual laureates, 12 million Swedish kronor will provide a significant financial reward. But the lasting significance of the Nobel Prize will continue to come primarily from the discoveries, creative works and peace efforts being recognized.
As the Nobel Prize enters its 125th anniversary year, the increase from 11 million to 12 million Swedish kronor marks another chapter in the long history of one of the world's most recognizable international awards.
