A 17-year-old high school student in Wuhan, central China, suddenly developed facial paralysis after a period of heavy academic pressure and prolonged sleep deprivation, drawing renewed attention to a condition that doctors say has become more common amid recent temperature changes.

The student, identified as Xiao Chen, had been under considerable study pressure and frequently stayed up late. After temperatures in Wuhan dropped sharply, he suddenly developed weakness on the left side of his face. His symptoms included a crooked mouth, difficulty fully closing his left eye, water leaking from his mouth while brushing his teeth and food becoming trapped while eating.

He was initially diagnosed with facial paralysis at a nearby hospital. After three days of treatment without obvious improvement, he was subsequently treated at the Acupuncture Clinic of Hubei Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Doctors used acupuncture, moxibustion, facial massage and other treatments, after which his facial movements improved significantly and his overall facial nerve function recovered without reported lasting complications.

Doctors at the hospital said the number of patients seeking treatment for facial paralysis has recently increased as Wuhan experienced a sharp temperature drop and larger differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Facial paralysis, often referred to as Bell's palsy when it involves acute peripheral facial nerve dysfunction, can cause sudden weakness on one side of the face. Typical symptoms include difficulty closing one eye, a drooping mouth and problems with facial movements. Children and teenagers can also develop the condition, and many recover completely.

Doctors say several factors may be associated with facial paralysis, including viral infections, fatigue and insufficient sleep. In some cases, other medical conditions such as ear infections, trauma or neurological problems may also be involved. The exact cause therefore needs to be determined on an individual basis.

The recent cases have also highlighted the importance of distinguishing facial paralysis from a stroke. Sudden facial weakness can have different causes, and medical assessment is important, particularly when symptoms appear abruptly or are accompanied by other neurological signs.

Doctors advise people experiencing sudden facial weakness, difficulty closing an eye or an obviously crooked mouth to seek medical attention rather than simply waiting for the symptoms to disappear.

For students in particular, maintaining adequate sleep and avoiding prolonged exhaustion may be important during periods of intense academic pressure. Doctors also recommend protecting the face from direct exposure to cold air when temperatures fluctuate sharply.

The Wuhan teenager's case serves as another reminder that sudden changes in facial movement should not be ignored. While facial paralysis can often improve with appropriate treatment, identifying the cause and receiving timely medical evaluation remain important for recovery.
