China Wins First Gold Medal at Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Women’s Modern Pentathlon

NAGOYA, Japan, Sept. 20, 2026— China claimed its first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, with its women’s modern pentathlon team taking the top spot and successfully defending the title won at the previous Asian Games.

The Chinese team, made up ofZhang Mingyu, Wu Xiyao, Fu Jing and Meng Xin, secured the gold in the women’s team event, marking the first gold medal for the Chinese sports delegation at the 2026 Asian Games.

The result came on the first full day of the Games’ athletics program, adding another highlight to China’s campaign in Nagoya.

China Claims Its First Gold

The women’s modern pentathlon team event brought together athletes competing across multiple disciplines, testing not only physical strength but also shooting, fencing, swimming and running skills.

China entered the competition with high expectations after winning the same event at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.

The victory in Nagoya means China has successfully defended its Asian Games title in the women’s team competition.

For Zhang Mingyu, Wu Xiyao, Fu Jing and Meng Xin, the gold medal also provided an early boost for the Chinese delegation as competition intensified across 43 sports at the Games.

A Strong Start for China

China had already secured medals earlier on Sunday.

In the men’s individual triathlon, Chinese athleteZhang Xiruiwon the silver medal, becoming the first Chinese athlete to earn a medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Zhang finished second behind Japan’s Takumi Hojo, who won the host nation’s first gold medal of the Games. Kazakhstan’s Arlan Zhanabay took bronze.

The modern pentathlon victory therefore became China’s first gold of the Games, adding to the delegation’s early medal haul.

Defending the Title in Nagoya

The Chinese women’s modern pentathlon team arrived in Nagoya as the defending Asian champions.

Winning the team event again underlines China’s continued strength in the discipline, while also giving the delegation an important early success at an Asian Games featuring more than 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games officially opened on Sept. 19, although several competitions had already begun because of the event’s packed schedule. The Games feature 43 sports and run through Oct. 4.

For China, the first gold medal has now arrived.

With two weeks of competition still ahead, the victory by Zhang Mingyu, Wu Xiyao, Fu Jing and Meng Xin gives the Chinese delegation a strong start to its medal campaign in Japan.

China’s first gold in Nagoya belongs to the women’s modern pentathlon team — and the Chinese delegation’s Asian Games campaign is only getting started.
