BEIJING, Sept. 20, 2026— China has reported a series of major breakthroughs in advanced technology and large-scale engineering projects in recent days, spanning water infrastructure, commercial spaceflight, advanced manufacturing, energy storage and nuclear technology.

The latest achievements include the opening of the Pinglu Canal, new records in satellite launches, the rollout of a giant domestically developed tunnel-boring machine and breakthroughs in high-end industrial materials. Together, they highlight the rapid development of China’s technological and engineering capabilities.

Pinglu Canal Opens to Navigation

One of the most significant developments came on Sept. 16, when thePinglu Canal, a key component of China’s New Western Land-Sea Corridor, officially opened to navigation.

The canal is designed to accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 tonnes and was built to the highest inland-waterway navigation standard in China.

The project has also set four world records, including the strongest navigation capacity among comparable canals and the world’s largest inland water-saving ship lock. At the Madao ship lock, the maximum water-level difference between the upstream and downstream sections reaches 29.6 meters.

The canal is expected to strengthen the connection between inland regions and international maritime routes while improving the efficiency of freight transportation.

Commercial Spaceflight Continues to Accelerate

China’s commercial space sector has also delivered several notable results.

On Sept. 16, theGravity-1 Yao-3rocket successfully launched nine satellites from waters in the East China Sea. The mission was the first maritime launch in the East China Sea to deploy satellites for the Qianfan constellation.

The launch also set records for the payload weight and orbital altitude of a Chinese maritime launch mission.

Just one day earlier, theZhuque-2 improved Yao-7rocket successfully placed 10 satellites into orbit. The mission marked the first large-scale satellite internet constellation deployment mission carried out by a Chinese commercial rocket.

The developments come as China seeks to expand commercial participation in spaceflight and build large low-Earth-orbit satellite networks.

China Unveils Its Largest Domestic Tunnel-Boring Machine

Infrastructure technology has also reached a new milestone.

On Sept. 15, China unveiled its largest domestically developed tunnel-boring machine in Zhengzhou, Henan Province.

The machine has an excavation diameter of16.68 meters, is 125 meters long and weighs approximately 4,800 tonnes. It is designed to operate under complex geological conditions while balancing excavation efficiency and construction safety.

The equipment is expected to support the construction of major underground infrastructure projects and reduce reliance on foreign high-end engineering equipment.

Breakthrough in High-End Hydropower Materials

China has also made progress in materials technology for large-scale hydropower projects.

Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group recently announced the successful application of900-megapascal ultra-high-strength magnetic yoke steelin the giant rotor of Tibet’s Zhala hydropower station.

The rotor weighs approximately 840 tonnes and is part of a 500-megawatt impulse hydropower generating unit described as the world’s largest of its type.

The development represents a full chain from material research and industrial production to engineering application, demonstrating the ability of domestically produced high-strength steel to meet demanding requirements for large hydropower equipment.

New Energy and Nuclear Technology

China is also pushing forward with next-generation energy technologies.

On Sept. 16, construction began in Shandong Province on the country’s first demonstration project combiningmolten-salt energy storage with carbon-dioxide power generation.

The project is designed to integrate advanced thermal energy storage with supercritical carbon-dioxide power-generation technology and is scheduled for completion and operation in 2027.

Meanwhile, China has achieved domestic production of krypton isotope thickness-measurement sources, marking a shift from reliance on imported products to domestic supply. The technology is used in industrial thickness measurement and quality control in areas including batteries, specialty paper and thin-film manufacturing.

Advanced Manufacturing Gains Momentum

The latest engineering breakthroughs are accompanied by rapid development in advanced manufacturing.

China reported that during the first half of 2026, value added by large-scale equipment manufacturing rose9.3% year on year, while high-tech manufacturing increased13.3%. New growth drivers contributed more than half of the increase in industrial output during the first seven months of the year.

In Zhejiang, an AI-enabled fully direct-drive CNC machine has achieved machining accuracy of around four micrometers, while its overall performance is reported to be 30% to 60% above relevant national standards.

China is also expanding the use of artificial intelligence in factories. More than 43,000 smart factories have been established nationwide, according to recent official figures.

From Individual Breakthroughs to a Broader Technology Ecosystem

The recent wave of achievements covers a wide range of fields, from giant infrastructure projects and rockets to industrial machinery, energy systems and advanced materials.
